Detroit has a strong sports scene, thanks to professional teams like the Red Wings (hockey), the Pistons (basketball), Lions (football), and Tigers (baseball). And don't count out Ann Arbor and East Lansing, which are two Big Ten towns within driving distance, to satisfy your sports cravings. You really have to go to at least one game while in Detroit because you won't get a true feeling for the city without it. Detroit has hosted the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in the 1980s, the 2005 MLB All-Star Game, Super Bowl XL, the 2009 NCAA Men's Final Four and in 2010 will host the NCAA Men's "Frozen Four". Detroit has also hosted the WWE's WrestleMania twice. Detroit currently plays host to the IRL Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, ALMS Detroit Sports Car Challenge, and the SCCA SPEED World Challenge Detroit, although all 3 are currently on hiatus. Detroit also hosts the Chrystler Gold Cup hyfdroplane racing, and the world-renowned Red Bull Air Race World Series, which wll return for a second year in 2009.
Catch a game at the Joe Louis Arena and find out just why this town is commonly referred to as "Hockeytown". Detroit's hockey team, the Detroit Red Wings, are one of the NHL's most successful franchises, winning 11 Stanley Cup championships, including ones in 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008. Detroit's basketball team, the Detroit Pistons, have won 3 NBA championships in 1989, 1990, and most recently in 2004. The Detroit Tigers (Detroit's baseball team) have also been on the uprise in the last few years, even headed to the 2006 MLB World Series, only to lose to the St. Louis Cardinals.
If collegiate football is more your scene, there's a healthy rivalry between the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes to keep you entertained. The United States Congress has even recognized it as the "greatest sports rivalry in history", something Red Sox and Yankees fans might hotly contest. There is also the equally-intense in-state rivalry between the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans.
For those who'd rather get in the game themselves, Detroit has a number of recreation and community centers scatted about the city where you can take part in a game of basketball or other activities.
