On the south shore of the Island is an abundant lawn filled with aromatic lilacs and a scenic view of the water.  The lawn sits in front of Fort Mackinac where you can hear fife and drums being played throughout the day.

Pack a picnic lunch, a blanket and a good book.  On a sunny day, you could spend all day there.  Catch a tan, people watch, play frisbee.

One of the most cost effective things to do on the island is to have lunch on the lawn.  If you didn't pack a lunch, there is a market across the road where the local residents shop for their everyday needs.  They have a deli where you can buy sandwiches and deli salads.

If you're there in the late afternoon, you will get to see the honorary Boy/Girl Scout Colorguards lower the flags with a horn playing and a gun salute.

So if you have more than a day to experience Mackinac Island, a nice afternoon spent on the fort lawn is a great way to relax.
