Meritage is an independently-owned, chef-driven restaurant in the heart of downtown St Paul. It is located in the historic Hamm building (built in 1919), and is within about 2 blocks of all major attractions in the downtown area. The space is very dramatic and warm; 30 ft ceilings, enormous zinc detailed mirrors, mahogany table-tops and paneling. Meritage is a French Brasserie, and it really feels that way.
The food is from Chef Russell Klein, a French trained New Yorker, who moved to Minnesota and ran the kitchen at W.A. Frost (a Saint Paul institution) for his first five years, until meeting his wife and them opening Meritage together. The Menu offers some traditional dishes, such as; Coq au Vin, Cassoulet, Bouillabaisse - as well as some Seasonal New American, such as; Black Trumpet Mushroom Crusted Venison Loin or Hazelnut Crusted Dayboat Scallops.
The restaurant offers a wine list about 180 bottles deep, with more old-world styling. There are also some interesting non-alcoholic beverages.
Complete this place with their cheese cart; artisan fromage from around the world, and you've got a little slice of Paris in downtown St Paul.
