St. Paul has a surprisingly strong sports scene, with the most well-known team being the Minnesota Wild hockey team, which plays at the city’s Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul. Other teams include the St. Paul Saints minor league baseball team, the Minnesota Thunder professional soccer team, and the Minnesota Swarm of the National Lacrosse League.
In nearby Minneapolis, you can catch a Twins game (professional baseball) or a Timberwolves game (professional basketball). If you are into college sports, University of Minnesota has numerous teams that are competitive on the college division one level.
Catching a St. Paul Saints game is an excellent family-oriented way to spend an afternoon or evening. Between each inning, various contests are held on the field for kids, including three-legged races, go-cart races, and relay races. The St. Paul Saints games sometimes feature a barber who cuts hair in an area directly behind homeplate, but be aware that the gentleman who does the cutting seems only to have one type of cut in his repertoire: high and tight. For those who want to be spendy, $150 will allow you to watch the game from a spa. The game is narrated by a Ryan Seacrest-like announcer / commedian named Rusty Kath. Rusty stands on the third base dugout with a microphone and comments on the game as it progresses, often turning weak ground-outs or pop-ups by the opposing team into comedic moments. Rusty is also announcer for the Minnesota Swarm.
