Ship Island is a wonderful get-a-way 12 miles south of Biloxi and Gulfport, MS.   Locals go in their own boats and the Ship Island Excursion boat takes tourists several times a day for an enjoyable 30 minute ride out to the island.  There was a snack bar, showers and bathrooms on the island pre-Katrina, near the Fort Massachusetts.  Now there are bathrooms and the fort still stands and can be toured daily at your leisure.  The East end of Ship Island is accessable only by personal watercraft, as the excursion boat only goes to the west end.  The island is cut in two by Hurricane Camile.  Great fishing and shelling to be had.  Bring plenty of high SPF sunscreen, umbrellas and chairs and refreshments (no glass on the island) and spend all day and watch the sunset.  Dolphins are guaranteed to be seen as well as shore birds, brown pelicans, and on the east end you may see an osprey. Frequently seen are blue crabs (August and Sept.) starfish, sand dollars, and always hermit crabs.  Watch for an occasional sting ray or jelly fish.  The water on the south side is often the emerald color of Pensacola, FL. and is just as clear.  Great family destination.
