Some of the more interesting places for scoring some local souvenirs around Ruidoso are the artisan workshops that sell carved wood. There is one at Mile 26 on US Highway 70, where a family-owned business has sold carved wooden bears since 1995. Other stores that sell these types of goods include Woodworks Primitive Furniture at 302 Gavilan Canyon and Lynx Woodworking & Crafts on 437 Canyon Road in Ruidoso Downs.

The carved wood bears, made from cedar, pine or juniper, come in all different sizes and are all made by hand. Prices start from about $30 for small bears and go up to $100 for large ones, though you can always order a super-large one for extra. People can even bring in their own wood or tree stumps for special orders.

Other types of gift shops are available too. Misty Mountain Gourmet Shoppe has some excellent types of coffees and teas available, as well as gourmet jams, snacks and candy. End of the Vine on 2801 Sudderth Drive sells local wines and other gourmet food. You can also go straight to the source of the wine by driving to Alamogordo, where you will find the Arena Blanco Winery and Pistachio Tree Ranch. The country store here sells homemade pistachio products and award-winning wines.
