A Madikwe Game Reserve local author has to be Herman Charles Bosman - although when he lived and worked in the area it was not a Game Reserve, but four large farms.  His name is famous in South African literature and he is one of our much loved and admired authors.  (There's a great biography about him by Valerie Rosenberg called Sunflower to the Sun telling of his amazing, interesting and varied life.)

He lived in the Groot Marico bushveld area and worked as a teacher for a short time (before receiving the death sentence for murder ... a real character!) and writes with such clarity, precision and dry wit easily capturing the magic of this wonderful part of South Africa.  My favourites include Mafikeng Road (this historical road runs straight through madikwe), The Bekkersdal Marathan, In the Withaak's Shade (cry every time I read that, or even think about it!), Willem Prinsloo's Peach Brandy, Marico Scandal, The Love Potion ... real little gems narrated by Oom Schalk Lourens that will make you laugh out loud and weep with affection.  Even if you're not coming to Madikwe, do yourself a favour and enjoy some of his magic!

Another author who writes of this area is Alexander McCall Smith with his series of First Ladies Detective Agency books set in Gaborone, just 15 kms from the Reserve.  (Gabs is the capital of Botswana and the South African/Botswana border is the northern border of Madikwe.)  He too captures the spirit of the people with easy, calm little stories.
