Children and families can enjoy Lake Placid together, especially if they are fans of outdoor activities. Kids will forever remember the bobsled rides, Water Safari fun and fishing adventures that they enjoy while visiting Lake Placid.
Children who are at least forty eight inches tall can have the ride of their lives at The Olympic Sports Complex, where they can team up with a professional bobsled driver for a half mile ride down the actual bobsled track used by professional athletes during the 1980 Olympics. Luge rides are also available for the brave of heart. For the little ones who aren’t quite yet ready for the real ride, Main Street offers Virtual Reality Bobsled Rides.
If winter sports aren’t your thing, take the kids to Lake Placid in the summer. Enjoy fishing on the lake, camping in the outdoors and other natural adventures. New York State’s largest water theme park, Water Safari, is not far away and offers an excellent way to keep kids entertained throughout an entire day. Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf is another theme parks enjoyed by kids visiting Lake Placid. For those kids who get excited whenever a train passes by, The Adirondack Railroad Adventures scenic train ride is also an excellent option.
If you want to dunk your kids in nature, head to the nearby Wild Center in Tupper Lake. There are live river otters, live birds, and many hands- on exhibits. The Museum takes a half day. It was designed by the same people who did the Air & Space Museum in Washington DC. There are clouds being formed, big glaciers moving, and lots of hiking trails on the grounds. One of the top draws in the Adirondacks, (The New York Times called it 'Stunning') and you'll see why, especially if you pack the kids. They'll never believe it's a museum when you're done with the day. It's open all year, and there are free test drive snow shoes for all ages, and snow hikes offered daily.
About twelve miles northeast of Lake Placid is Wilmington, home of Whiteface Mountain. Besides the attraction of the mountain's gondola rides in the summer, and skiing in the winter, Wilmington is home to Santa's Workshop, the first theme park in the U.S., which opened in the 1940's. In addition, there's High Falls Gorge which provides a meandering walk with great waterfall views.
Another live attraction is a family horseback riding adventure at the Lake Placid Club. Horses used at this stable have been rescued from unfortunate circumstances. Safe for children of all ages, great for beginners, and experts alike. You can plan your family vacation and incorporate the Adirondack Equine Center at the Lake Placid Club. Views of the high peaks, Mirror Lake, and ski jumps.
