The Akrotiri archaeological site near Thira, Santorini, re-opened in April 2012. Discovered in 1967, "the Pompeii of the Aegean" was buried under vocanic ash in the second millenium B.C.. Based on inscriptions, artifacts, frescoes, etc. this community, with its advanced drainage system and three story buildings, was thought to be a member of the Bronze Age Minoan Kingdom. Excavation at Akrotiri is ongoing; objects from the site are displayed in the Prehistoric Museum of Fira, Santorin's main town, a short drive away.
