Plattsburgh was named after Zaphania Platt, the area’s first settler. It was officially founded in 1788 and incorporated as a village in 1825. It was granted a city charter in 1902.
Plattsburgh has a strong military past, first tied to the Revolutionary War, when, during the Battle of Valcour, Benedict Arnold successfully commanded a small fleet of American vessels against much greater British forces.
The town’s true military history is more closely linked to the War of 1812, when British forces consistently attacked Lake Champlain as an invasion route to the United States. United States forces were able to contain the British forces throughout the summer of 1813 to the Richelieu River in Quebec. The following winter and summer, the American shipbuilders busied themselves building a naval war fleet in Vermont.
By the time the British launched an assault on Plattsburgh in 1814, the naval fleet was ready and, though the 2 ½ hour battle cost more than 140 lives, the U.S. was able to beat back the British and claim U.S. soil as truly U.S. soil.
In the years following, Plattsburgh’s location brought many wealthy people and dignitaries to the area, and effectively turned it into a resort and vacation area. The area also became a center of industry and trade. Several presidents and well known Americans (including baseball legend Babe Ruth) visited Plattsburgh in the summer, or kept summer homes here.
The area is still a source of trade and industry and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
