Even though Rochester is a smaller city, the dining is great and rivals cities twice its size.  Italian cuisine is the most popular by far, with many Italian restaurants to choose from.  Some of the standouts are Mario's Via Abruzzi, Bocaccini's, Nick's Seabreeze, Michellina's, Agatina's, and Proietti's.  Also great to check out is the Ravioli Store on Winton Avenue.  They make many varieties of homemade ravioli and baked goods. 

Italian is not the only cultural cuisine available in Rochester, however.  There are many great Asian, Indian, Mexican and Mediterranean restaurants as well.  For great Mediterranean, try Oasis or Brio.  A great place for Mexican food and margaritas is Mex.  The Plum Garden has great Asian dining including sushi and hibachi tables.  You will also find great sushi at California Rollin' and a couple great Chinese restaurants include the Golden Port and Jade Palace.  Authentic Indian food can be found at Thali of India. Abyssinia serves outstanding Ethiopian food.

You will also find great American style dining in Rochester.  Black and Blu steakhouse is a standout.  Great barbecue and blues can be had at Dinosaur BBQ.  2 Vine, Grinell's, and JoJo are some other great restaurants.  For great European style dining, try Philip's European, who also has the best and most elegant desserts in the city.  If nothing else, go there for coffee and dessert, as they are open late. 

Rochester is also known for the Garbage Plate which was originated at Nick Tahoe's and has become copied by almost every diner, pizza shop, and hot dog stand in the area.  A Garbage Plate typically comes with mac salad, french fries or homefries, and baked beans piled on a plate, topped with your choice of hot dogs or hamburgers, slathered in hot sauce and onions, and served with a slice of bread or a roll.  Try a Garbage Plate with Zweigles white hots which are unique to the area.

Another Rochester favorite is Abott's custard.  With a variety of flavors and sundaes it is a great way to cool down an a hot summer day. 

Finally, while in Rochester, be sure to check out Wegman's grocery store.  Their prepared foods area is great for picnic lunches or meals on the go.  The Pittsford location has an outstanding restaurant on site, Tastings.  Wegman's is truly not your average grocery store.
