There is no place like Bald Head Island if you really want to get away from it all. It is so peaceful but there is plenty to do if you want to be active. The beaches are unspoiled and the golf carts that come with the houses are so much fun. It is worth the splurge to stay near the beach. The maritime forest is interesting but kind of dark and buggy so you don't really feel like you are at the beach. Also, "West Beach" is really on a river and the beach quality and views are nothing compared to South and East Beach. Killegray Ridge and Flora's Bluff have great vacation rental homes.. The area looks like a mini-Cape Cod and views are great. The best deals on the by-owner websites (VRBO, Cyberrentals, etc.) so shop around rather than counting on the agencies which aren't always the most knowledgable or professional. A temporary membership in one or both of the local clubs come with most rental homes (but doublecheck that they have access before booking). The Shoals Club is beautiful - it overlooks Cape Fear which is spectacular. Give the island a try. You won't be sorry.
