TRAVEL  Alert:   April 25, 2007:  Major Construction On Hwy 321 traveling from the Lenoir/Hickory area.  The road is closed for two hour periods at a time.  Try to plan your trip around this.  The best detour is to go I. 40 towards Asheville and take either Hwy 221 or 181 up to Hwy 105 which will take you into Boone.  This is expect to continue for a several months if not longer.

Boone is located at quite a distance from major airports, so there will be a good amount of driving to do no matter where you live. Some of the major cities closest to the city are Charlotte (110mi/175km), Greensboro (115mi/185km), Raleigh (195mTTri/310km) and Atlanta (290mi/465km), all of which have international airports (Charlotte-Douglas, Piedmont Triad, Raleigh/Durham and Hartsfield-Jackson, respectively). You can find numerous car rental agencies at any of these places. Boone is located on US-321/221 about 10 miles east of the North Carolina/Tennessee border and 25 miles south of Virginia. You can also request an airport pickup or drop-off with AppalCART, the country public transportation system.

There are also regional airports in Johnson City (60mi/100km), Hickory (55mi/90km) and Morganton (50mi/80km). Hickory and Morganton have no commercial flights. Johnson City, located at the junction of Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia, has daily connections to Atlanta, Orlando and Cincinnati via Delta, Detroit and Memphis via Northwest and Charlotte via US Airways.

The closest Amtrak station is in Greensboro, which is on the Carolinian/Piedmont and Crescent routes. The first runs from Charlotte up to New York City, stopping at Philadelphia, Richmond and Raleigh along the way. The second runs from New York to New Orleans, with major stops being Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Charlotte, Atlanta and Birmingham.

There are Greyhound bus stations in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Kingsport, Tennessee, both about 80mi (130km) away. Winston-Salem is the larger city, and has direct routes to various cities such as Charlotte, Richmond, Raleigh and Columbus (Ohio).

10/30/09 - US Hwy. 321 between Lenoir and Blowing Rock is still closed for two hours at least twice a week (Tu./Thurs.) and sometimes more often.  It seems as if they are rebuilding a mountain there.  This construction (actually a highway bridge and straightening/widening the road) is likely to continue for at least another year!  A strong recommendation for driving between Boone and Charlotte is to take I-77 out of Charlotte and then connect to US Hwy. 421 W toward Wilkesboro.  This is a preferred route for many local people. (This is longer than some of the other routes, but it is probably faster, as it is 4 lanes the entire way until you reach Boone itself.

Incidentally, 421 from NC 194 into and through Boone itself (King St.) is being widened.  Expect construction delays for several more months.
