Durham is a great town for both participating in and watching sports.  To satisfy your own hunger for an active life, head down to the Eno River on the outskirts of the city.  Here you can wade in the river and fly fish or hike along the several paths that go along the river.  It's a great source of excercise and a good way to spend time with family or friends.

Now, for those who like to watch:

Duke Blue Devils Men's Basketball Team

The Blue Devils are almost perennially favored to make it to at least the Sweet 16 of the NCAA's.  There is no doubt that they are the cream of the college basketball crop.  They have won three national titles in the last 15 years, and just watching the Cameron Crazies, as the student section is known, is a spectacle in it of itself.

Durham Bulls

The Bulls are the AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.  Considering that the Devil Rays have finished near or at the bottom of the league since their inception, they've had some pretty stellar draft picks.  Some have panned out and are now playing a great brand of baseball for the Bulls.  Even if you are not the biggest baseball fan per se, you will still have a great experience attending a Bulls game.  Grab a lawn seat in the bleachers and picnic with your family or grab front-row seats at a relatively cheap price.  Everyone will enjoy the beautiful HOK (Camden Yards)-designed Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
