Most travellers travelling to the lower Sunshine Coast (Gibsons, Sechelt, Pender Harbour) travel by ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale. Horseshoe Bay is located in West Vancouver. Langdale is a 5 minute drive outside of Gibsons. The schedule for the ferry can be viewed at: Travellers should make sure they are looking at the correct dates for their trip.

On average the ferry leaves each port every two hours. In July and August the ferry runs more frequently. The ferry crossing is 40 minutes. Travellers only pay one way. Travellers pay to travel from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale but do not pay to travel from Langdale to Horseshoe. Currently (2009) the cost for a car and driver is approximately $50. The current fare list can be found on the BC Ferries website.

While BC Ferries does take reservations, they are not required, so think carefully about your needs before making your reservation. Only a portion of the available space on any ferry is available for reserved vehicles, the remainder is first-come, first served. The reservation system was set up primarily to accomodate travellers who could not afford the time to be bumped to the next ferry. Sailing waits are routine from May to October - especially on the weekends; any long weekend through out the year; and any day of the week during July and August. Note that reservations must be claimed during a narrow window of 60 to 30 minutes prior to sailing. BC Ferries does not want reserved vehicles taking up precious space at the terminal more than 60 minutes before sailing, but will sell your reserved spot to someone else if you don't arrive 30 minutes before your sailing. You will need to present the credit card used to make the reservation or the confirmation number at the gate to claim your reservation. You will then be charged the crossing fee (just so you don't think that the $15 covers your costs - that's just the cost of making the reservation).

Alternatively travellers may arrive on the lower Sunshine Coast from the upper Sunshine Coast (Powell River) via the Earls Cove - Saltery Bay ferry. For this ferry travellers also only pay one way - travellers pay travelling from Saltery Bay to Earls Cove (Powell River to Pender Harbour). This ferry also runs approximately every 2 hours. The current schedule can be found at: Travellers should note that midday during the winter there is a break in the sailing schedule. The ferry crossing is 50 minutes. Reservations are not available for this route. This ferry is considerably less busy than the Horseshoe Bay - Langdale route and sailing waits are a rarity. When travelling by ferry travellers are reminded that " too often we are so preoccupied with the destination, we forget the journey." Both ferry routes to the the Sunshine Coast are beautiful and provide the traveller with beautiful coastal vistas. The opportunity to get outside and see the views offered while travelling on a ferry should be taken by all travellers.
