Two museums that you shouldn't miss, especially if you are visiting Bend with the kids are:
- Located in a historic schoolhouse at 129 NW Idaho avenue, Deschutes County Historical Museum presents an exhibition that spans more than two centuries of the history of Bend and Deschutes County. There is also a research library which includes many old photographs, as well as a museum bookstore. A variety of events are offered throughout the year including symposiums, presentations by local historians, and a holiday bazaar. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 to 4:30. Admission is just $5 for adults and $2 for children 13-17.
- Located three miles south of town at 59800 S Highway 97, The High Desert Museum explores the culture, history and wildlife of the High Desert. You can meet live wild animals, from a bobcat, lynx, otter and fox to owls, eagles and reptiles. Visit with 1880s pioneers, and explore Native American and Western art and cultural exhibits including an indoor, re-created frontier mining town. Authentic, fascinating, fun and lively for the entire family. Cafe and gift shop on the grounds. Admission charge varies by season. The museum is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm May through Oct., and from 10-4 Nov. through April.
