Most visitors to Salem arrive by car, although there is also train and bus service to the city.

If arriving by car, Salem is located directly on I-5 freeway. To reach Salem from the central coast, head east on Hwy 18, then take Hwy 22 to downtown. If you are traveling to Salem from the high desert area, take Hwy 20 westbound to Hwy 22, which goes directly into the city.

Salem's nearest airport is Portland International Airport (PDX), 45 miles north, served by over a dozen airlines. There are several major car rental companies located at the airport.

To get to Salem from PDX without renting a car, you can take the HUT  Portland Airport Shuttle with scheduled service nearly around the clock. The ride takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.  The Salem stop is in the lobby of the Red Lion on Market Street. Reservations are required. 

Greyhound buses offers daily services to Salem from locations in southern and northern Oregon. The central depot is located at 450 Church Street NE.

Amtrak Cascades  (servicing Vancouver, BC; Seattle, Tacoma, Portland and Eugene) stops at Salem. Unreserved Coach Class and reservable Business Class are offered.  Bicycles may be carried on board as baggage for extra fees. It has several daily departures.

The Coast Starlight , departing from Los Angeles Union Station and heading for Seattle, also stops at Salem. It has daily frequency and the trains offer first class service with coach and bedroom facilities, dining and  lounge cars, checked baggage, and video entertainment for kids. Amtrak Railroad station is located at 500 13th Street SE.
