Colt State Park is one of New England's hidden little gems. This park is beautifully landscaped, with many miles of lush green grass, wooded picnic areas, and breathtaking views of the Narragansett Bay. Although there's not much soft sand here, it's rocky shoreline would attract shell collectors and families who are eager to explore it's water's edge. Rich with colonial history, it's origin dates back more than a century when Colonel S.P. Colt was generous in allowing public access to his private estate. At the entrance to this park there are a pair of life-size bronze bulls situated on large carved marble pedistils. The tree-lined roadway first leads you to Bristol's town beach where you will find not only it's uncombed peaceful beachline, which is great for tanning or reading a book as the sailboats drift by, but you will also find Bristol's recreation area. In the beach's foreground there are three baseball fields, a skateboarding park, and a playground that overlooks the beach. Continuing through the park, the roadway then winds around to a picturesque view of Bristol's harbor. With many seagulls flocking above it's rocky shoreline, you will also find acres of shady grassy areas to fly a kite, have a pcinic, play frisbee, toss a ball with your children, rollerblade, or walk your dog along a paved trail coastline. There are also many hidden wooded paths here that are great for hiking and exploring. This park also offers a wedding chapel where it's romantic setting by the water has attracted several matrimonial couples to this area. All in all, this park is breathtaking, and if you plan on spending a day in this park, pack a lunch, bring your family and friends- (and don't forget your camera)- as this is surely a memorable place to be in any one lifes history.
