Historic Carnton Plantation

Experience the moving stories of the Battle of Franklin at this beatifully restored plantation home. During the Civil War, Carnton Plantation was home to Colonel John and Carrie McGavock, featured in the New York Times bestseller, Widow of the South. As the Battle of Franklin began with the Federal line just a few hundred yards away from Carnton, the home was eventually swept into the battle and became a field hospital to the hundreds of wounded. After the battle, the dead were buried where they fell, in shallow graves. A few years later, the McGavocks had the soldiers properly buried on their land adjoining their family cemetery, now a national landmark called the McGavock Confederate Cemetery.
