There are some wonderful things you can do that are off the beaten path,

like go take a t'ai chi class at The Chinese Connection Kung Fu School in Port Warwick.  Walk-ins are welcome to this incredible Chinese cultural center that offers t'ai chi, ba gua, and martial art classes to the public.  Classes are offered in 45 minute, follow along sessions for only $15, and the teacher is kind and amazingly patient.  Each additional family member is $10 off!  They offer classes in the mornings and evenings, and walk - ins are welcome by appointment to join in a group class for all levels, and beginners are welcome in the level 1introductory class.  For the more dedicated, try one of the single or duo private training sessions.  For the fitness enthusiast, try a walkin class in the 545pm kung fu fitness.  You will have so much fun, and classes are for ages 13 and up.

A bit more challenging than the static yoga you can try just down the street at Zenya, the t'ai chi incorporates slow movments and exercises using your own body weight for resistance strength training.  Left and right sided exercises are performed slowly and at your own pace, and breathing (not forgetting to breath) is key.  You will sweat so much!  This place is friendly, family-friendly, and loves to let Ben the cat supervise the t'ai chi push hands segment of class on the stool in the corner.

For a great visit to Newport News on a rainy day, consider visiting Port Warwick, take a t'ai chi class at The Chinese Connection Kung Fu School, get some ice cream or a soda at the Pharmacy, visit Julie in the Fine Art Gallery, and paint your own pottery at the Starving Artist Studio.

Port Warwick is located off of Jefferson Av. down Loftis Blvd. near City Center!
