Don't miss a show at Leavenworth Summer Theater. The Sound of Music at the Ski Hill Amphitheater just above the village of Leavenworth is a real classic - just like they say it is. Stunning views of the village at night, the sky changing colors as the sun goes down, and the stars in the sky after dark. Maria really does come in on the hillside through the pine trees. It's a very different experience to see this show outdoors in such a wonderful location.
The theater itself is very small - only about 16 rows - so there are no bad seats. It does tend to sell out, and babies or children under 5 are not admitted. Their website has good basic information to help you pick a date and know what's up. www.leavenworthsummertheater.org
The Sound of Music is performed about 20 times each summer. They do two other shows as well. One is outdoors in the Icicle Valley at the Hatchery Park Stage. The other is indoors at the downtown Festhalle for those who want to walk from their hotel or like air-conditioned, indoor seating. These two shows change every summer. Some of the shows are very family friendly and others are more geared to adults. The website does have family guidelines on it for each show so you can decide what works for your kids. Elementary age girls usually love The Sound of Music. For the outdoor venues, dress warm or take layers. It can really be chilly after dark as the cool air comes down the Cascades or Icicle Valley. Hats, jackets, blankets all help if you get cold easily. There is bottled water and such for sale at a concessions stand.
