The Shop’s at Mauna Lani’s free Polynesian hula show is an affordable family cultural event. (They run two different shows from 6-8 on Monday and Thursday nights.) The hula troupe incorporates their entire family into the show including a ten year old and a three year old. The children in the audience can watch the keiki up on stage twirling batons and dancing to the pounding Polynesian beat. There are also fire dancers and women wearing coconut bras..yes, really.
[NOTE: time has changed as of March 2013 -- found only TWO shows a week -- at 7PM, Mondays and Fridays. Get there early if you want a seat! And they gave out a free ticket for the 4D show nearby]
You can sit on the terraced lawn steps or on tables behind the terrace. Audience members have the chance to have one of the performers come up with a scary warrior stance and then shake their hand after the effect of shock is created. They do a nice job of audience participation by bringing up members of the audience to dance with the troupe, too.
You can incorporate the hula show into a trip to see the Puako Petroglyphs. Lots to see around that area and the good news is that you can do alot of it for free! The Shops has quality cultural entertainment going on throughout the month.
The fountains at The Shops are a place where kids can actually put on their bathing suits at the nearby bathroom and run through the water fun. The water plays like a mini-version of the fountain in front of the Bellagio in Las Vegas. It dances and leaps and the kids never know when it's going to change, promptlng much amusement. Of course, you can't just leave your kids there and go shopping, but you CAN sit on the lawn terraces on a beach towel and enjoy some of the tasty fare that the Shops offers like smoothies, ice cream, deli sandwiches, pastries, etc, or treat the kids to a restaurant experience. Once, of course, they dry off!
