There are many opportunities available all year round for exploring the vibrant culture of Lahaina. In February, the people of Lahaina celebrate the Chinese New Year with a street festival on Front Street. In March, the annual Ocean Arts Festival is held in honor of the migration of Pacific Humpback whales, and in April, the town throws a birthday party for its landmark Banyan Tree, which is at the center of the celebration again in December with the Holiday Lighting of the Banyan Tree.
Those visiting Lahaina in June can observe Na Kamehameha Pa'u Parade & Ho'olaule'a, held in honor of King Kamehameha and his family who once ruled over the islands. The parade is highlighted by riders on horseback wearing colorful flowers that represent the eight major islands.Organizations like Friends of Moku`ula and Maui Nei also provide information about Lahaina's history and culture and offer a variety of cultural activities along with a walking tour for visitors.
Lahaina Heritage Museum features a world-class exhibit, "Always Lahaina," which takes the visitor on a timeline of Lahaina's history from pre-contact Hawaii through the Monarchy period, arrival of the missionaries and whaling era to the plantation era. Lahaina Restoration Foundation (LRF) has a self-guided walking tour of Lahaina's historical sites with interpretive signs. LRF also hosts annual events that showcase the multi-cultural history of Lahaina, like Plantation Days in October.
In Central Maui, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center holds many indoor and outdoor concert events year-round, featuring a variety of entertainment. Included are two free Hawaiian music concerts: Slack Key Guitar Festival in June and Maui Ukulele Festival in October. Bring a beach chair or towel; island food and crafts are available for sale. Maui Historical Society has an annual event in November with outstanding music and crafts on the lawn at Bailey House Museum.
