is a warm, inexpensive and cozy musical treat. The music ranges from straight ahead instrumental jazz, vocals, blues, jazz-rock and fusion. The atmosphere feels European because all ages are welcomed. Seniors to little children come. The music is usually first rate, the drinks are cheap and the wait staff is friendly and personable. The 55 helps to develop emmerging artists. Owner, Queva Lutz, seems to not be interested in commercialism. She seems to like to nurture promising talent. She is one of the few nice owners in this business! Also, the 55 has had such jazz greats as Ravi Coltrane, Lew Solff, and Bob Cunningham. Cecil Taylor and Henry Grimes have been known to stop by and to sit in. Because the 55 has an unusual atmosphere it is usually crowded - especially for the early sets. Vocals are a hit!
