Breakfast in New York is spelled B-A-G-E-L. If you've never eaten a real New York bagel, you've never eaten a bagel. Scientific studies have been done that show it has something to do with the water in NY.
You're never more than a few blocks from a bagel store and they generally open by around 5am so they're a great breakfast for early risers, in fact they're best hot, right out of the oven. Flavors are a personal preference ranging from onion to salt, to pumpernickel, cinnamon raisin, and everything (the Works). New Yorkers do not eat chocolate chip bagels.
Traditionalists eat them with cream cheese or butter but you can go wild if you like and have one with lox (smoked salmon), eggs and onions and everyone will think you are a real New Yorker.
