There are two ice museums in the Fairbanks area. The Fairbanks Ice Museum in downtown Fairbanks has a relaxing and beautiful slide show about the World Ice Art Championships, which are held in Fairbanks every February/March. After the show, you can walk into a giant freezer to see the ice sculptures up close, take photos, slide down an ice slide, and experience the cold of winter. Admission is $12 per adult. Open during the summer only.
The Aurora Ice Museum is located at Chena Hot Springs Resort, 65 miles outside of Fairbanks. It is an entire building that is refrigerated year-round by locally generated geo-thermal electricity. World champion ice carver Steve Bryce has created a hotel made of ice. Everything from the beds and chairs to the fireplace and chandeliers are made of hand-carved ice. Each hotel room is decorated differently. Flickering LED lights and color-changing chandeliers light the area, which can be photographed from an ice tower inside. You can even sit at the bar and have a martini in a a glass made completely of ice! Admission is $15 per adult for a guided tour. Open throughout the year.
