If you have a car, try to get out to Kanegra to the beach. It's about a 20 minute drive from Umag centre, but the beaches are the best around. Be mindful that there are no sandy beaches as such, so take some kind of water shoes and something soft to lie on. The beach in Kanegra usually has the cleanest water, slightly cooler, tends to have a breeze and has a great view across the water to Portoroz in Slovenia.

If you have very young children, Glavna Plaza ("head beach") is the place for you. The water is sandy underfoot, very shallow and very warm. Very popular with families.

For a great meal, if you have a car head out to a little village called Bujstina. It's out of Umag about 10 minutes drive and really popular. Here they sell local delicacies -- the cheese with truffles is to die for and a meal for two with plenty of wine works out at about 20 GBP per head. Remember though, that the tolerance level for drinking and driving is ZERO.

Head out of town to the hill towns of Motovun where they have a film festival every summer, Groznjan where they have a jazz festival or Brtoniglia where they occasionally have concerts in the evening.
