You can walk up to see the terminus of Fox Glacier for free. It is a shorter walk than at the Franz Joseph Glacier. You get a good view of the ice from the public view point. If you are driving past (say, on your way to Haast) it is worth a look. If you have a couple of hours spare and aren't worried about a 20km gravel road that is narrow and lots of corners, then drive out to Gillespies Beach. This is past the Lake Mathieson car park. The average rural kiwi will think the road is fine, travellers might need to be a bit cautious. Lots of waves and sparkly rocks and a toilet/picnic area and walks. You might need your own loo paper, tho. Don't miss the old graves and wild sheep.
