Providence, just like any other city, has a unique performing arts and theatre background. Many plays and operas can be seen in the city, and there are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to catch numerous shows that travel around. Some places to see shows include the NewGate Theatre, Perishable Theatre, Providence Performing Arts Center, and Rhode Island College. These venues offer a wide range of shows that will suit most anyone's interests. If traveling with a family, you can also check out the Feinstein IMAX Theatre, which shows movies on a larger than life screen. Many times throughout the year ice shows and other events will travel to the Dunkin Donuts Center for a reasonable price. Concerts also pass through Providence quite frequently. In fact, Providence is well known in the area for smaller bands to tour. Playing in bars and clubs, these concerts are relatively inexpensive and provide great entertainment for young people in the city. Because of the large college-aged population, there is a plethora of venues for art shows and other exhibits. Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) turn out some of the brightest minds, and their art work gets put on display quite often and is generally open to the public.
