Many in the New England region consider Providence like a baby brother to Boston, and with that in mind, Boston sports teams have located their farm systems in Rhode Island. The first team that comes to mind is the Pawtucket Red Sox. Pawtucket, which is only a ten minute drive from Providence, is a smaller city with not many other features besides the Triple A baseball team. Many of the Red Sox prospects spend their time here waiting for their time to be called up to the big leagues. The PawSox website can be found here. If you don't feel like leaving the city, you can always head to the Dunkin Donuts Center for the Providence Bruins, the minor league team for the Boston Bruins. A list of the games for the Bruins can be found here. Of course, you need to make sure that the sport you choose to watch is in season and the team is home before heading down to the stadium or arena. Another well known activity in Providence which is fun for the whole family is the lighting of the three rivers on fire. This is a tradition that takes place every couple of months in good weather. Workers head out on the rivers in barges and light drums on fire near the downtown area where three rivers merge. This free event is usally on a Saturday night, and patrons can ride in boats and be serenaded along the way.
