Schilo's which is pronounced SHE-LOWS started in Beeville, Texas by Papa Fritz Schilio in the early 1900s. In 1914, he moved his family and business to San Antonio, Texas. Prohibition forced Commerce Street Schilo's Saloon to close in 1917. Later that year, Schilo's reopened on the corner of South Alamo and Worth Streets. Mrs. Schilo spent her weekends preparing the food using her own recipes.
In 1927, Schilo's again moved to Commerce Street. Schilo's survived the Great Depression and Mama Schilo's Split Pea Soup and huge hot lunches became a local favorite. In 1935, Papa Schilio passed away and his son, Edgar took over the business. In 1942, Schilo's again relocated to its present location. Although the Schilo's are no longer associated with the current business, it's still German-owned and operated.
