Sanctuary of the Nazarene

(Ermita del Nazareno)

The Sanctuary of the Nazarene is located at Plaza Santa Maria, on Calle Carrera, near the corner of Calle del Colegio. The chapel was constructed in 1688 and remodeled in 1778. Later the Escuelas Pias (a school for the boys of the most prominent families of Andalusia) incorporated the chapel into the school. In the 1990's, the chapel was again remodeled. There is only one nave in the chapel. The main altar has the Rococo style and contains the sculpture of Jesus Nazarene. The sculpture has been attributed to Diego de Vega and was sculpted in 1580. There is widespread devotion to this image of Christ. The chapel has a painting of the Virgen del Carmen, and another of San Juan Nepomuceno. Other artwork in the chapel are a painting of the Virgen de Gracia, a painting of the Apparition of the Virgin Mary to San Juan de la Cruz (18th century), and other chapel altarpieces.
