Description:
Port Antonio is considered to be the birthplace of Jamaica’s tourism. At the end of the 19th century, Port Antonio burst onto the international stage as the banana capital of the world. Quickly, the town became known as the vacation spot for the world’s rich and famous and a haven for wealthy merchants who built their winter homes throughout Port Antonio. This wonderful spot was then glamorised by the Hollywood stars of the 1940s and 1950s . It was once the primary Jamaican destination for the movie stars, politician and tycoons. Then the Montego Bay airport was built and the tourist industry grows there in a very big way today. Port Antonio still remains this quiet jewel, a perfect hideaway for people who don’t want to be the center of attention. Many famous early visitors were Rudyard Kipling, Ginger Rogers, Errol Flynn (who bought a nearby island), J.P Morgan and William Randolph Hearst, as well as many others. It is still frequented by movie stars and visitors looking for a quiet escape. It is a low-key peaceful spot surrounded by nature’s magical beauty.
