Only 35 miles north of Cardiff and the M4 motorway, Penstar is easily reached by road. The area is well served by public transport with daily express coaches to Cardiff, the Midlands and Yorkshire. The nearest railway station is at Merthyr Tydfil and a bus connects Brecon to this railway station.

From the centre of Brecon cross the main bridge over the River Usk and drive through Llanfaes. After passing the Esso garage, National Tyres and Brecon Car Sales, turn left immediately opposite the Drovers Arms public house. Drive down Ffwdgrech Road and under the Brecon bypass to a road junction just over a bridge. 4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2015 for a stay in November 2014

I was one of a group of lads aged 16-61 on a weekend away. We arrived late at night so were unable to see much until the morning, when I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful surroundings. The bunkhouse had a well equipped kitchen and two large dining tables so could easily cook for and seat 20 people. The beds were basic but I was comfortable, lets not forget this is a bunkhouse! The shower wash rooms were adequate and the water always warm, and we didn't have to fight for space! As noted by the previous reviewer there were only benches to sit on, but I expect this as it is a basic bunkhouse and we had brought camping chairs anyway. We sat outside one night around a blazing fire pit which was provided with lots of logs. The bunkhouse was well located with Brecon a few miles down the road where we did some kayaking, as well as direct access to the beacons for walking. All in all we had a great stay and this place makes an ideal budget facility for larger groups. more

The bunkhouse is clean, basic, warm and has a well equipped kitchen as well as good showers / washrooms. Be aware that the only seating available are hard benches - there is nowhere comfortable to sit in the whole place, something to think about if you've been on your feet all day! more
