Aikwood Tower is full of stories--every stone has a secret and if you listen you can almost hear them whisper. It is 16th century and occupies a proud site on a hill by a trickling burn that7 finds its way the Ettrick Rover which runs nearby. You are surrounded by hills and if you look out the window at night the only lights to be seen are at the farm next door.
It is peaceful and historic but not spooky or isolated--Selkirk is just 5 mins away by car and Edinburgh airport is an easy hour away through lovely countryside (less lovely if you get stuck behind a tractor but hey, it's the country).
I came to Aikwood for just over a week to write. I didn't want to see or hear another human being so I didn't order in caterers or any of the other options presented to me. The very helpful and kind Roddy, who looks after the place, did pop in to make sure I hadn’t gone mad and he took me to the local shop to stock up on milk and whiskey.
