Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Idyllic, romantic cottage
Boot and Shoe cottage is set right on the River Tees near to Barnard Castle. It's tatesfully furnished with very comfortable beds. The back garden overlooks the river and is a gorgeous spot to sit and watch wildlife. A perfect break in a totally comfortable and welcoming cottage!

Peaceful, cosy cottage in idyllic location
We enjoyed a perfect couple of days at Boot and Shoe. The cottage faces onto fields at the front and backs onto the river Tees, with a multitude of wildlife to be spotted. Great location for visiting the Durham and Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines. The cottage itself is cosy and homely, with lots of references to its former use and local history, which we loved. If you're on the tall side watch out for the sloping ceilings upstairs. Rachel, the owner, welcomed us but otherwise left us to our own devices. She also left home-made bread, jam and biscuits, which went down a treat. All in all a lovely stay and we would love to return, hopefully for longer next time.

Cosy and Quaint
We brought our grandaughters ( 8 and 6 years) and as soon as we got there they thought it "Ace".They spent a great deal of their time with the hens., Great position with lovely walks from the doorstep, helped by good weather. Halloween was great fun as it was pitch dark outside! Chocolates and welcome pack from Rachael were much appreciated. As the girls bedroom was very compact I don't think we will return other than as a couple, which I'm sure we will.

The perfect location for a tranquil relaxing holiday.
This cottage is so comfortable and has everything you need for a wonderful Holiday. Enjoying our morning coffee by the side of the river with only the sounds of the water and the birds was heaven. The location of the cottage is excellent for day trips around county Durham and the Lake District. Rachel has an excellent supply of booklets in the cottage for ideas on activities nearby. Our week went by so fast, hope we can visit again in the future. Definitely recommend this cottage.

Peaceful cottage in beautiful position
This L-shaped cottage is much bigger inside than the front suggests, and has been well laid out to provide all you could need and lots of comfort (- sloping ceilings make getting out of the bath a bit of an adventure). Fascinating photo album of the renovation of a building that goes back 400 years. Also a wealth of pictures and articles on the walls with some interesting history. The river was high and fast when we were there, and provided a great backdrop. A really lovely place for a quiet break.

Wow fantastic location and outlook
Had a lovely week at the boot and shoe cottage, fantastic location very quiet and peaceful and the view of the river really special. The cottage was well furnished and cosy good to have a utility to put boots and coats, the only down side was the lack of storage for our food in the kitchen but after a bit of a re jig managed to free a shelf to put our groceries. I would recommend the cottage as the location is great for many outings. The chickens are great fun as well and the eggs were delicious kids enjoyed cottage too, good time by all.

Please keep this gem a well hidden secret!
This was our sixth visit over ten years or so and we just love this place. Barnard castle is a lovely market town with plenty of buzz, the walks from the cottage are fantastic, the river on the doorstep is priceless and the wildlife spotting opportunities second to none. Kingfishers, otters and lots more on this visit. The cottage itself is comfy and well equipped and Rachel is the perfect host in our book - in other words she leaves you to your own devices! People were swimming in the river but we weren't that brave....
