    On Lipari Aeolian islands we rent 'casa particular al tramonto' old stone barn amid a vineyard with suggestive westward views across the sea to Filicudi, Alicudi and Sicily's Mt.Etna, and from the roof terrace, views of Vulcano and Salina. Accessible via a muletrack some 150 meters from a clearing for parking cars and scooters, the house is comprised of a 30sqm studio with a 1.80m high sleeping loft offering sunset views from a double bed. Ground level double sofa and large bathroom with shower. The room leads into the kitchen, which was once a stable - no horsing around when cooking though! This charmingly renovated rural building combines rustic simplicity with modern comforts. Situated a few kilometres above the main centre it is surrounded by fields where local people work planting and harvesting.
The grand views of the sea from the covered verandah and open upstairs decks are uninterrupted. These are great for lazing the day away or watching the sunset with a drink in hand. We had a Vespa which we hired at the port when we arrived. Transport is essential to enjoy this haven and the interesting village of Pianoconte. There is a super market here. Even with transport you have to walk two hundred metres on a rough track to get there. The Vespa was great for touring round the island and popping into town. There is a very irregular bus service but not reliable.
The place was clean and comfortable. The kitchen sits beside the main space connected by a small sheltered courtyard. We cooked for ourselves a few times but there is really good local pizza place and...
