Windale cottage is one of the five holiday cottages converted from barns contained within a courtyard setting. Wetheral Cottages are situated in the village of Great Salkeld. All of the cottages are now heated using a central ecological biomass boiler reducing carbon emissions and improving safety as there is no longer any gas within the cottages. The local pub is no more than 100 yds away, the pub has a friendly local atmosphere and serves excellent food. The village offers tranquillity, yet there is easy access to the lakes and mountains of the Lake District, the Scottish Borders, Hadrian's Wall also the many interesting villages of the Eden Valley and Northern Pennines. Local activities include: Walking, Cycling, Golf, Swimming, Sailing, Fishing or visiting the many attractions and... more

Me and my girlfriend arrived Friday afternoon for a 3 day stay. I got engaged in our cottage (she said YES on Valentines day) an we toured the lakes for the next three days. The cottage was superb and we would definitely go back there, comfy, nice place to spend time relaxing and with all that the area has to offer, you are never far away from something new to see, Great local pub with plenty of character and good ales. All round top location, many thanks to John and Linda, will never forget our weekend stay. more

After a break of over 20 years, have stayed at the cottages twice within 6 weeks!Brought back many happy memories of past holidays but pleased to find that the village (Great Salkeld) has not overly changed during this period.
John and Linda offer clean, appropriately furnished, quality accomodation with the emphasis on comfort in a peaceful,de-stressing environment. Some reviewers have described the decor as "dated" - I would say the whole environment is entirely appropriate to the buildings ie. renovated stone cottages. All linen, towels etc provided = just turn up!If you really have to bring the laptop, free wifi is available.
I would recommend heartily, for those wanting a quiet, relaxing break. The local hostelry, the Highland Drove ,offers a good selection of real ales, and a full menu - chaps, the pub is a 2 minute walk from your front door!
If you've always wanted to write that novel, this is a great place to hole up in!
