The cottage garage houses the ping pong, tumble drier, barbeque and extra fridge freezer if required. There is room for safe bicycle storage and you can charge your e-bike there. The house garden is a haven for wildlife so full of birdsong and you may see our pheasant, deer, badgers, foxes, squirrels, a hedgehog or Mr Mole. Your own garden is small and very private. The situation is very quiet and peaceful, save for the church bell practice on Wednesdays or the children playing outside at the school up the road in Back Street, in term time and of course the odd mower in summer. The hill above the village is the highest point in Warwickshire and there is wonderful walking country all around, the whole area being criss crossed with walking and bridle paths; you can wander through open fields, along escarpments and through wooded areas or just meander on the many village footpaths. A little stream trickles through the village and a mini-waterfall cascades from the restored medieval fish ponds which are owned by the manor house. The cottage is 4 minutes walk from 2 good dining pubs serving lunch and dinner,The Red Lion & The Howard Arms- Bronze award in Pub of the Year for England amongst the accolades. The excellent village shop on the Upper Green, sells fresh fruit and vegetables, locally sourced meat, bread from a local bakery. A cafe is attached. More grocery shops are 5-10 mins drive - Chipping Campden or Shipston, Waitrose supermarket is only 10 minutes away. There is a Sports Club in Ilmington and a leisure centre 5 minutes drive away. Lovely welcoming cottage in the Cotswold with everything you need
This cottage was everything we hoped for and more! The owners greeted us the first day and welcomed us with fresh bread, fresh picked raspberries, homemade raspberry jam and delicious cookies. Champagne awaited in the refrigerator. The cottage was lovely and the pictures were a true representation. Cozy living room, great bedrooms and a lovely and functional kitchen with a small but beautiful patio garden. My husband and I loved our stay and Felicity could not have been a more gracious hostess - making sure we were comfortable but never intruding on our privacy. Also a great location from which to explore the Cotswolds - many beautiful and historic sights to see but always nice to return to our quiet cottage and the town of Ilmington at the end of the day. One of the local pubs, the Howard Arms was a first rate pub to unwind at after a day of exploring - I think the owner may have wondered if we were moving there as he greeted us most evening. I would highly recommend this property and we hope to return some day.

Thank you so much for your lovely review. You just caught the very last of our raspberries. But there is always jam! We are lucky to have such a great pub within staggering distance. We hope to see you again in the future.

A lovely cottage near Stratford
This was a wonderful cottage in a lovely quiet lane with a private garden to the back, full of flowers. The beds were comfy and the shower was great. We had several very good meals at the local Howard Arms but could easily have cooked a Christmas Day lunch at the cottage as the kitchen was so well equipped. The hosts welcomed us with homemade goodies, bread, jam and flapjacks and were so helpful when asked for advice. We would definitely return.

Wonderful holiday cottage
We stayed a week at Sansome Cottage and had a thoroughly good time. The cottage itself is roomy and comfortable, with a lovely garden to sit out in, and is so well equipped- Felicity has thought of everything, and she and Tony were so helpful and knowledgeable. The village itself is beautiful, with a wealth of walks nearby, and is also a good base for touring the Cotswolds. The village shop and cafe and its 2 pubs are all good.Sansome Cottage is an exceptional holiday cottage and we would definitely recommend it!

I was really pleased to get this lovely review (thank you Gill!) and I am so glad these guests had a good time and good weather in Ilmington and around. They were a pleasure to have to stay. I never run out of different ways to walk in the Cotswolds, mostly around Ilmington, whether it be in sun or snow.

Cosy and comfortable cottage, a perfect base to explore the Cotswolds
We booked a week in Sansome Cottage in January, desperate for a holiday even though it was the cold winter months. The cottage was perfect for us, a lovely generous size for two people staying, although it easily fits more. We enjoyed many an hour in the lovely sunny kitchen, and in the evenings gravitated towards the lounge, where we lit the open fire several times, a real throwback to my childhood home where we had an open fire too. The cottage is centrally heated so the fire was just for atmosphere but so enjoyable. It had everything we needed for our stay and the weather was extremely kind to us, so we had a truly relaxing week. We spent most days going out and about, exploring Stratford upon Avon with a very interesting walking tour, the villages of Shipston on Stour, Moreton in Marsh, Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the water. All very different to each other and plenty to see, eat and shop for. At the weekend we enjoyed the National Trust properties, the fascinating Upton House and nearby Hidcote Gardens. We tried both the village pubs and had the best pub gammon and chips I've ever had at The Red Lion. We also had a night out at The Pudding Club at a hotel in Mickleton, about ten minutes drive away. A slightly mad but fun evening trying out seven traditional English puddings and voting for your favourite. All in all a perfect break and we'd love to return to explore the area at a different time of year.

It was lovely to have these guests stay as they threw themselves into everything despite pretty horrible weather and really took advantage of being in the centre of our interesting area, not to mention visiting a few of the many fabulous eating establishments around here. I would love to welcome them back at a time they can enjoy more of the outside and the general 'greeness' and floweriness of the Cotswolds.

Thank you very much for your lovely review. I am so pleased you liked the cottage and the village. Ilmington has been named as one of the Sunday Times' Best Villages to live in - but great to stay in too!.

Wow! What a stunning cottage.
I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone! I visited here with my partner and had an exceptional experience. If you're after an escape to the country this is the place for you! The host Felicity, had thought of everything to ensure our stay was perfect. Upon arrival there was warm freshly homemade bread and Flapjacks (a recipe i'm trying to re-create) along side a full afternoon tea set up to enjoy on our first day. Felicity had thought of everything and all the touches around the house (guide books, evening chocolates, makeup face flannels for the ladies etc) made this cottage a stand alone property. The beautiful quintessential English cottage is set in a stunning Cotswolds town - with a delightful pub/restaurant called The Howard Arms (well worth a visit!). The property was spotless and was a real home from home. The beds and sofas are exceptionally comfortable - perfect for sinking into with a book by the open log fire. Experience was absolutely faultless - a must visit for those looking to visit the Cotswolds!!

The Perfect Cotswold Cottage!
We spent two wonderful weeks in the Sansome Cottage, for the required COVID quarantine, and I can't imagine a better place to stay! Upon arrival we were greeted by Felicity, the wonderful hostess, who supplied delicious homemade bread, Jam, and biscuits, along with fruit, veggies and bottle of champagne. The cottage was very comfortable and was well stocked with everything we needed for our stay. Ilmington is the perfect location for a Cotswold vacation. We enjoyed many walks through the English countryside and the cottage is full of maps and books which we used to guide our way. Thanks Felicity and Tony! We hope to be back for a visit again soon!!

Lovely cottage in the Cotswolds
The whole process of booking was easy, and Felicity - one of the owners - was very good at answering queries about the property. The cottage is well equipped and comfortable, with a sheltered back garden to sit in and relax. The kitchen has everything you might need, and there was a freshly baked loaf and some biscuits waiting for us, together with a bottle of milk and fizz in the fridge. The village is lovely, with a very well stocked local shop, and two pubs within walking distance. The cottage is well situated for visiting various parts of the Cotswolds, and we had a number of lovely trips including afternoon tea on three occasions. We also visited Stratford and Oxford with ease. A highly recommended let for anyone who likes their comfort and travelling to different places.

I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed the cottage and also its convenient position for enjoying other places. We are fortunate to be in both the Heart of England and the Cotswolds so you can enjoy the scenery and the pretty villages as well as the more 'happening' places like Stratford and Oxford. Thank you for your lovely review!

Highly recommended charming cottage
My wife and I spent a wonderful month at Sansome Cottage. The cottage is roomy, cozy and comfortable. The kitchen/dining room is well equipped for cooking. There is a lovely private garden. In cool weather, the wood-burning fireplace is cozy. Ilmington is a typical, lovely, north Cotswold village. It is off the beaten path but close to the beautiful market towns of Chipping Campden, Shipston-on-Stour, Moreton and Stratford. It has 2 pubs, a village market and tea room. We recommend the Howard Arms. We enjoyed getting to know our lovely host, Felicity, who is a great source of information. She is very helpful but not intrusive. We were welcomed with wonderful flower arrangements in every room from her garden. We look forward to visiting again.

One simply could not do better than to choose Sansome House Cottage
We recently had 10 days in the Cotswolds and having rented from Felicity and Tony before we were anxious to stay at this place. We could not have asked for better, more thorough and caring service. They are available for any needs or wants. The cottage is very comfortable, immaculately clean, well-situated, quiet, spacious, well and charmingly decorated and very well equipped, The kitchen has everything you could want for cooking, for certain the best that we have seen in any of the many rentals we have used. Our time there was perfect, the location was great - close to many places of interest, the hiking was wonderful, and the many special touches, such as the abundant information on the local area, made the stay most memorable. Thank you Felicity and Tony.

Delighted you enjoyed your stay and found the kitchen well equipped. We can nearly always lend something found missing (e.g. the fish kettle which is stored with us). I am currently updating some guides for my files which suggest circular day trips out by car, visiting places of interest with the centre of the universe, of course, being Ilmington!

Map
About the neighbourhood
Ilmington has an excellent village shop open 6 days a week + Sunday morning and with a cafe attached. There are dozens of beautiful villages around; most of the houses and cottages are built from locally quarried Cotswold stone which glows golden in the sunshine. Nearby: The delightful Hidcote Manor garden, 3 miles. A National Trust garden and, arguably, the best one in England. Designed by Lawrence Johnston, an American in the early 1900's, it features a series of 'rooms' as well as wild areas and woodland. Opposite this, the delightful privately owned, Kiftsgate Garden. You can walk to Hidcote from the cottage through the fields or take it in on a 7 mile circular walk to include the excellent Ebrington Arms pub in Ebrington. The old wool market town of Chipping Campden has a wealth of antique shops, ancient buildings and tearooms. I can recommend places here for cream teas! Historic Shipston on Stour boasts a High Street voted in top 10 of England (because of its mix of traditional shops). A charming town which has managed to retain the independent shops and so far, fight off the incursion of the big supermarket giants. You will find the butcher, the baker...but I don't think there is a candlestick maker. 10 -15 minutes drive away, Moreton in Marsh, with a railway station, has a very big street market every week. Visit Stow on the Wold with a good selection of upmarket shops including some excellent antique hunting places, Broadway, Leamington Spa and Warwick, with its famous castle. Lots of other castles in the area - Broughton, Kenilworth, Sudeley and of course Blenheim Palace at Woodstock. The beautiful Cotswold town of Burford is worth putting on your list (about 30 minutes drive), not least for a visit to the Burford Garden Company on the outskirts which is much more than a garden centre and serves delicious food as well. Take in a visit to the atmospheric Minster Lovell hall nearby, in the Windrush Valley. The huge amount of literature on the area left in the cottage for you includes my own guide to parking (+ location of public loos!) in several of these places. The counties of Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire all meet just outside Moreton in Marsh with Worcestershire little distance away to the West so you have a wealth of historical places on your doorstep. This is Shakespeare Country - For houses, theatre, museums, shopping etc. Stratford on Avon is 15 minutes away. Oxford (33 miles) and Cheltenham (40 mins drive) are easy to reach. London by train is 1.5 hrs from Moreton in Marsh Station. There is something for everyone in the area with riding, golf, fishing and countless other pursuits within a 5-15 mile radius. Museums for many different tastes abound and the local art gallery at Compton Verney is in a beautiful setting, visitable just for that alone. Blenheim Palace at Woodstock (<30mins drive) is worth devoting a whole day to with his historic Churchill connection as well as its fabulous park, lakes and gardens.
Getting around
Although a car is not essential ( with a shop and two dining pubs + online supermarket delivery availability) we do recommend that you have one, in order to really get the most out of your holiday as there are so many wonderful, sometimes out of the way, places to explore. Local transport is sketchy but improving (4 x buses to Moreton and Stratford now Mon-Sat). There are trains to London from both Stratford and Moreton in Marsh. I have devised some suggested day trips which I have left in the folder - mostly encompassing a historic house or garden of which there are many in the area.. Ordinary bikes as well as electric bikes are available locally for hire. The pedal cycles can be delivered to the cottage.Garage bike storage.

How to get there
Being in the centre of England we are not too far from a number of airports, London Heathrow (an hour and half by car) is probably best for trans-Atlantic travellers, but Birmingham is the nearest (45 minutes drive). But Bristol, East Midlands and London Luton are also within easy reach. A little further is London Gatwick (takes about 2 and half hours) and London Stanstead (about the same). Many of our visitors take the train from London to Oxford and pick up a hire car there, thereby avoiding driving in London, but an equal number pick up a car at whichever airport they land at. Local car hire can be arranged but it usually involves a taxi journey from the station although we recently have acquired a 4 times a day bus service from Moreton station to Ilmington. You can also get a train from London to Banbury (20 mins from the cottage) Parking is off road in our secluded courtyard. Access by road is easy as we are relatively near major motorways - M5 and M40 being about 20 mins drive away.
