We greatly enjoyed our stay, even though only one night. Our room was large and well-equipped and blissfully quiet, overlooking the garden. The bathroom was also spacious. We appreciated small touches, such as fresh milk and complimentary slippers. We were provided with a first-class dinner with attentive, but not obtrusive, service. The vegetable garden is impresssive.

We were warmly welcomed into this beautiful old house and taken into an oak panelled room where drinks were served within minutes. We were then taken to a light airy conservatory, and served the most delicious Sunday lunch. A mushroom soup to die for, medium rare roast beef with a variety of perfectly cooked vegetables, roast potatoes and roast parsnips, and a giant fluffy Yorkshire pudding. The sweet trolley, laden with deliciously tempting desserts was a gloriously nostalgic trip to our younger days and we loved seeing what was on offer. The staff here are a delight. Professional, attentive, friendly and really good at their jobs. It was our first time here, and I promise we’ll be back at the first opportunity. A great way to start the Christmas holiday Thank you to all.

Family-run Goldstone is our favourite place to stay as a group of friends. Our second time in December when once again, the welcome was warm, the fire was blazing in the grate in the entrance hall, a beautifully lit Christmas tree in every bedroom, and the staff were lovely. Lunch and breakfast were delicious, and the bedrooms are the best; we never want to leave.

Visited for our anniversary. Beautiful setting and the building, what we saw, was truly stunning. Although the chap we saw was friendly enough, the whole evening lacked any atmosphere. We sat in a room with three large tables occupied by two other couples. It was so awkward and we felt we had to whisper, not comfortable at all. We did end up speaking to one couple just before we left. Unfortunately we were quite disappointed in our meal. We had scallops as a starter and although tasty, were served only 1 which we felt was a bit stingy. We both had venison Wellington as a main. The venison was so overcooked it was difficult to cut and the pastry was soggy and undercooked. The accompaniments were a tasty dauphinoise and 1 miniscule carrot and turnip. Neither of us ate it all sadly. For dessert I had the pear dessert which was a souffle. It was grainy, far too sweet and the pears at the bottom had zero taste. My husband has the cheeseboard which he enjoyed. The coffee was tasty but neither of us enjoyed the petit fours as too sweet and we didn't enjoy the flavours but appreciate that this is a personal thing. Overall, for us personally, a disappointing experience. We were so looking forward to it. Although we wouldn't return, it may have been just an off night so I wouldn't want to put anyone else off

Response from Goldstone Hall, Owner at Goldstone Hall Hotel
Responded 3 Nov 2023
Dear Tripadvisor readers, This report misses the detail that this couple visited on the night of Storm Babet and the weather hullabaloo kicked up by the media had put the mockers on most of our diners who postponed/cancelled as the media persisted in scaring us all into believing in impending doom. So, we moved the three tables into our cosy wonderful oak panelled room with its own large wood fire. This would ward off the wretched storm and we could settle to a jolly time and ignore the outside battering. The reality is that the storm in these parts did not live up to the media hype and Goldstone being on the side of a tree strewn valley will never flood and we got it wrong. Apologies. The other two couples set too and bashed the wine list with more vigour than the storm could muster. It was clearly very frustrating for both Jayne and us because we only aim for and intend guests to have a great time and they didn’t. And if they don’t, we are up a gumtree. Tripadvisor is a force for good but why is it a sometime preferred route to grumble. It is a good way to vent a spleen but it doesn’t sort what didn’t do as intended. We both lose, the unhappy pocket stays reduced and we lose a guest so our pocket suffers too. We know all should be perfect and complaining is a tricky process because the Chef might appear in high dudgeon (He will not here and is a great guy) and a quick email avoids any perceived potential for a kerfuffle. We will be straight on it; we will always find a generous and mutually beneficial solution. We love our guests returning and returning not disappearing without a murmur and unfortunately once we get on this “platform” we both must live by the consequences and we both end up losing rather than winning. We, as a family, are determined to provide a wonderful warm welcome and part of that is a direct approach including sorting issues. Don’t grump in silence or bash the keyboard, let us know and we will sort it. We are very friendly, always working and never some faceless impersonal “brand” experience. This sort of review hurts and there could be far better outcomes with smiles all round and the keyboards would be happier too. With best wishes, John, Sue, Katie, Tory, sometimes Hannah and all the Goldstone gang. Ps to Book its 01630661202.

We booked lunch for the family to celebrate an 80th birthday. Everything was first class from menu choices to the attentive, helpful, staff and the relaxed ambiance of the hotel. A stroll around the beautiful gardens and tea on the terrace ended a perfect day. This is why, time after time, it's a place we enjoy returning to.

Goldstone Hall has a quintessentially English country garden with wonderful herbaceous borders brimming with summer colour. They also have a fabulous fruit and vegetable garden which is used to supply the restaurant. Our garden tour with kitchen gardener Sarah and owner John was very enjoyable and informative and we were encouraged to ask questions and taste the produce. We then had lunch in the characterful conservatory on socialable tables of six people. The food and wine was exquisite and the chef was rightly applauded when he appeared at the end of the tasting menu meal. Highly recommended for fabulous flavours , relaxed hospitality and horticultural excellence.

Our visit was to Goldstone Hall gardens, and we stayed on for lunch. For both of us it was our favourite visit of our week away. It was lovely to be welcome to look round the fruit and vegetable gardens too, and the head gardener spent some time explaining things to us. More people would enjoy visiting these gardens, well worth seeking out.

Stayed in this hotel as we wanted to visit Shrewsbury and the surrounding areas. The hotel is owned and run by a family. Our room was very big with a lovely handmade oak bed which was very comfortable and comfortable pillows too. The bathroom was large with a walk-in shower, a large bath together with wash basin and toilet. Toiletries were provided too and the towels were large and fluffy. Tea and coffee making facilities were in the room together with a fridge that had fresh milk and bottles of water in it. The room was serviced daily and was clean. Beautiful furniture and soft furnishings. The view of the garden was spoiled by the permanent marquee that is used for weddings Breakfast was served in the Orangery which overlooks the garden. The staff serving at breakfast were very pleasant but could have done with more training and supervision. We had to ask for some of the items on the buffet bar to be topped up on two mornings. The first breakfast we had was beautifully cooked and presented but on the second morning our friends and I had eaten our cooked breakfast before my husband was served his which was greasy. We had to request toast and further pots of tea. We had to wait for a member of staff in the mornings and some evenings to leave/ collect our key which was frustrating. Reception wasn’t manned and our friends had to wait until another member of staff asked the owner to come down from their office so that our friends could pay their bill. We saw the owners in their office every morning but not once did they come and introduce themselves nor were we asked if we had enjoyed our stay. The evening menu was a tasting menu of 5 courses which was too much for us. We asked a member of staff about the menu and it doesn’t change so had we eaten there in the evening it would have been a little boring Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return to this hotel.

6 of us celebrated a birthday. We were looked after so well. The staff were all friendly, the food was very well.presesnted and cooked. The bedrooms were super comfy, with complimentary slippers. We have stayed and eaten here previously and we are never dissappointed. It was lively after breakfast to walk around the garden which was just starting to awaken. If we had to be uber critical, maybe now you could loose the marquee, which was not the best view from the bedroom windows as its a little " mossy " and detracted from the beautiful countryside views. Now the oak pavilion is up and running, maybe no.longer a requirement for the marquee. It didn't spoil our evening. Its so nice to still get table cloths and nice glasses and table wear, which these days is lacking in the modern stripped back restaurants.

Sunday breakfast doesn’t get much more civilised than this. Met at the door, coats taken, log fires, beautifully set table with crisp white linen. Buffet table was laden with an array of cereals, various mueslis, fruits, yoghurt, jams, juices etc. I chose scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on toast - just excellent. Our other 3 chosen options were the full Goldstone breakfast, oatcakes, and scrambled eggs. All looked superb, and were thoroughly enjoyed. After teas, coffees and toast, we had a wander round the glorious gardens. Spring is well on its way. It will be a riot of colour in a couple of months. A superb breakfast at a very reasonable price.
