Here's how I choose lodging --- 1) a privately owned home that promises privacy with a great view or other unique amenities 2) one that has historical significance 3) individual cottages 4) kitsch motels or roadside attractions 4) retro-styled motels or as in my recent stay in New York City a hip, walk-up best known as one Madonna once lived in. Here's how I choose locations to explore --- 1) locales with a unique history (like the dead-end town of Bon Secour,AL best known as a shrimping community) or Bayou LeBatre, AL same as above 2) locales with spectacular natural scenery like all of NW AR, likewise Asheville, NC 3) cool, hip towns like Asheville, NC, Eureka Springs, AR, 4) towns with spectacular murals like Cape Girardeau, MO. 5) quaint towns like Fairhope, AL, St. Charles, MO, West, TX 6) I will determine "themes" for trips like "Route 66" or like one of my all time favorite "Natchez Trace." I'm likely to make up something like "Deli-Delight" or "BurgerQuest" and I'm off!
