If a hotel is clean and everything works (especially the shower, the toilet and the air conditioning if there is one), I will consider that it is worth staying at that hotel. I don't require a hotel to have a high star rating - two stars is often fine, but I sometimes select a three-star or higher just to have some assurance that the hotel is clean and provides an edible breakfast. The best hotels are small hotels with a really dedicated management and staff, family hotels are often best. Extra points for a good firm bed in good condition, quiet room, good breakfast, cheerful and chatty staff who really look after you, a good hotel guide in the room (breakfast hours, room service etc). Very good to have a safe in the room. I don't need for the staff to stand at attention when I come near, but it should not be too difficult to make them focus on whatever it is that I need.
