My booking request was declined. When will I get my money back?

First of all, please rest assured that you haven't been charged a penny. When you make a booking request, your payment is simply held by your bank until the owner is ready to accept it. In this case, the owner declined the booking request so we've told the bank to release your payment.

To clarify:

The pre-authorised payment will usually appear in the pending section of your credit card or bank account.

If your booking is declined, we automatically release the payment and you won't be charged.

Depending on the processing time of your bank/credit card account, this could take up to seven working days.

When the pre-authorised payment is released, it may appear as a refund on your statement or the original held payment will disappear entirely. Either way, your money will be returned to you and you won't be charged anything.

Remember: it may take your bank up to a week to stop holding the pre-authorised payment. Please contact your bank directly for more information - you can use your confirmation email about the declined booking as proof.

Arriving at the Rental

How does the check-in and key exchange process work?
Confirm with the manager/owner how you will get the key before check-in. Each manager/owner has a system for key exchange. For instance, property managers typically have key pick-up/drop-off at a central office location near your holiday rental. Other managers/owners may use lock boxes or keyless entry codes, or may simply mail you a key prior to your arrival. Some managers/owners like to meet their guests at the rental property to go over check-in/check-out details. In this case, you probably would not receive a key prior to arriving. Your rental agreement should include details about key exchange; if it doesn't, be sure to ask the owner/manager in advance.
Now that I've booked, how should I plan for my trip before I arrive?
You may want to ask the owner/manager for directions to the property, a list of included amenities, recommendations for local restaurants and things to do, and so on.

First, try calling the owner/manager using the phone number shown in the upper right corner of the inbox owner details section. You may also contact Tripadvisor Customer Service at the phone number listed on your booking form.

What is the cancellation policy for this holiday rental?
Each owner/manager has his/her own method for handling refunds and cancellations. if you paid via the Tripadvisor inbox, the cancellation policy that the owner/manager has set will be available when you view the details of the quote. Click "View cancellation policy" to see the specific details. If you paid the owner directly, your rental agreement should clearly state the cancellation and refund policies. Keep in mind that, unlike hotels, holiday homes can only be rented by one guest/party at a time; the owner/manager would need several weeks' or months' notice in order to provide a refund for a cancelled stay and try to find new guests. Guests who cancel their vacations at the last minute are not likely to be able to receive a refund.

Safe renting practices

How can I protect myself from fraudulent managers/owners?
Tripadvisor highly recommends paying via the secure Tripadvisor inbox. When you pay via the Tripadvisor inbox, your payments will be covered by Tripadvisor's Payment Protection. For all rentals, it is important to use a rental agreement before securing a booking. A written agreement helps you and the owner/manager cover all terms of service and will clarify outstanding questions.

Should I use a rental agreement?

It is important to use a rental agreement and communicate with the owner/manager before securing a booking. A written agreement helps you and the owner/manager cover all terms of service and will clarify outstanding questions. How to initiate the terms of service prior to officially confirming the booking: Work out the terms of the rental with the owner/manager by phone or email. Review the written rental agreement, as discussed with the owner/manager. Any questions should be answered prior to signing a contract. How can I pay using secure methods?
We recommend that you pay via the secure Tripadvisor inbox because you'll be protected by Tripadvisor's Payment Protection. You can use a credit/debit card or PayPal account when paying via Tripadvisor. We advise travellers not to pay by direct transfer, as there is no protection for these payments, in the unlikely event of fraud. Be cautious of owners/managers who require that you pay with cash or by Western Union or MoneyGram. Payment requests by bank transfer can be legitimate, but run the risk of being associated with a potential scam. On the rare occasion when a scam occurs or in an unforeseen circumstance when the rental is not lawful, your credit card company may be able to help, giving each traveller added protection. Each owner and manager with a property listed on Tripadvisor has been approved by the Tripadvisor Trust and Safety team. If you have any questions about the home that you are renting that cannot be addressed by the owner or manager, please contact us.
Should I wire money?
We would recommend not cash payments, bank transfers or any process where the funds cannot be verified.
