Roma Cottage is a charming ropemaker's cottage in the heart of beautiful Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast. Two hundred years old, but sympathetically restored, Roma Cottage retains many original features, from its beamed ceilings to quaint staircases. It is well furnished and provides comfortable, high quality self-catering accommodation. Set peacefully on a footpath, it is just 2 minutes' walk from the beach, pub and harbour. The spacious accommodation is set over three floors, with an attractive patio area with table and chairs to the front of the house and a small enclosed yard with barbecue and seating to the rear. In addition to the cosy log burner in the living room, the cottage is heated throughout by night storage heaters. With three double bedrooms and two bathrooms, Roma Cottage easily accommodates up to six people plus a baby. It's the perfect base for a relaxing break whatever the season, with its cosy living room and comfortable beds. In summer, sit out on the patio and watch the sunset with a glass of wine; in the chillier months, curl up in front of the warming log burner. Staithes was named by the Sunday Times in 2015 and 2016 as one of the 10 best holiday home locations in the UK: 'one of the friendliest and most artistic villages on the northeast coast. Its setting couldn't be more picturesque - cosy cottages scrunched up together on winding streets, tucked away in a jagged cove by the sea...a picture-book spot, with cottages packed tight behind the harbour'. Unspoilt beaches, fantastic walks and the delights of the stunning North York Moors National Park await you. Staithes is built into a cliff, and there is a steep hill down into the village. Many of the cottages - including Roma Cottage - are accessed via flights of steps. If you have any queries with regard to access, please ask. Steep Staithes
The cottage was lovely. We found difficulty with the steep steps and hills and suggest that more mention should be made in the advert of the unsuitability for the infirm. Staithes is a pretty village well worth exploring.

Perfect little getaway in the heart of beautiful staithes
We wanted to have a magical Christmas with some of our family and had never been away from home at this time - most of our friends and family thought we were mad for booking a ‘remote seaside location’ in the winter. What awaited us was just pure heaven - due to unforeseen circumstances our family could not meet up with us but we had one of the most special Christmas’s of our lives - Roma cottage is well located in the heart of this most special village - it is beautifully decorated, clean and very spacious and can easily accommodate 6 adults - it was really warm and cosy- the wood burning stove was the centre of our evenings and the cottage was close to the shops and pubs - the village itself is spellboundingly beautiful - gorgeous views from the hills looking down - fabulous coastal walk to ruinswick bay - it has one of the best pubs we’ve ever been to (cod and lobster) - and a very indulgent delicatesent- talking to other folk staying in the village we all agreed staithes is not just for the summer - I can’t think of a better place to spend a week in the miserable winter months - thank you Brenda - Roma cottage is just perfect we will be back

Great getaway
We booked a weekend at roma cottage and found it to be very comfortable and homely and a good Base to visit surrounding areas, the beds were very comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed. The location was good too for the local bars and restaurants. The only down side were the storage heaters as it did get cold in an afternoon after the had run out of power, the weather was particularly bad the weekend we were there so we could have done with some extra form of heating. There is an open fire but only warms the lounge, and as it was so windy we couldn't use it because of the downdraught so take extra jumpers.

Hi Jill - I'm so glad you had an enjoyable trip and found the cottage comfortable. Storage heaters are not the most responsive form of heating, but they can be adjusted, and the open fire is very effective when it gets going, so I'm sorry that you weren't able to benefit from it.

Clean, calm and cosy
We ended up booking Roma Cottage after another rental let us down and how glad we are that they did! We loved Roma Cottage with its well-equipped kitchen, comfortable seats and more crockery and cutlery than twice as many of us would have needed. The position is good - quietly situated back from the main road down to the harbour and close to the steps up to the cliff path and car park. We even managed to sit out in the afternoon sunshine in the little front garden. The cottage is gradually being tastefully and lovingly refurbished and there are some very welcoming touches like tea lights and matches, wood and coal for the fire. Highly recommended, the people in Staithes are just about the most friendly you could meet anywhere.

A lovely weekend spent in idealic setting
We had a lovely weekend staying in Roma Cottage. The cottage was clean and warm, if sometimes a bit too warm, but not complaining. The village of Staithes was lovely as always, and not too spoilt by tourists. I would recommend staying at Roma Cottage to my friends and family. Owner was courteous and prompt in reply to my queries.

About the neighbourhood
You'll find outstanding beaches at Runswick Bay and Sandsend within five miles. And just ten minutes' drive along the 'Dinosaur Coast' lies the historic town of Whitby, where you can sample kippers from the smokehouse at the base of the 199 steps up to the Abbey, then climb them for stunning views across the Esk Valley. Explore the Whitby Jet workshops and treat yourself to award-winning fish and chips at the famous Magpie Cafe. A little further afield you can find Scarborough with Sea World and the brand new £14million Water Park (opening Spring 2016), or catch a play at the renowned Stephen Joseph Theatre. You're an easy drive away from Flamingo Land, the Moorland village of Goathland (location for TV's Heartbeat), a steam train trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, or a day out in historic York. Bike hire, horse riding, golf and swimming are all available nearby, and there is a growing trend for surfing locally, with enthusiasts drawn to the waves off Staithes and neighbouring Saltburn.

How to get there
The easiest way to travel to Staithes is by car. From the north, approach the village via Teesside on the A1/A19 and A174 or from the south on the A64/A169 via Whitby and then along the coast on the A174. Travel via train is also possible and there are mainline stations at Whitby (10 miles from Staithes) and Saltburn (9 miles) and a good Arriva bus service between Middlesbrough and Whitby. There is no parking permitted in the old village, but loading and unloading is allowed for up to 40 minutes. Cars are then parked in the council car park at the top of the village. In the winter, this car park is free. For the summer months, we provide a free parking permit. Additional cars can park daily in the same car park for £5 for a 24 hour period. Tickets for longer stays may be purchased at the Tourist Information Office.
