About
This cruise takes you on an adventure in to the wilderness. Starting in the busy Glenfinnan area where we describe all the sights and detail the history of the village both old and modern. We soon whisk you off down the loch to the land of eagles, deer, Harry Potter landmarks and the home of the MacDonalds of Glenaladale. Gaskan cottage was the home of well known naturalist Mike Tomkies for many years whilst he studied and wrote of the local wildlife, especially the eagles and wildcats there. It can only be accessed by boat or very long walk so this part of the loch is very serene and unspoilt. This cruise returns to Glenfinnan jetty.

      Let down
First off don't be fooled by the pictures showing the Jacobite train going over the viaduct. It's either been enlarged or a telescopic lens used. The viaduct is quite a distance from the loch. We booked and paid for this trip a good week before going and wasn't advised that the company would be closing for the season on the 11/10/23. We arrived at the meeting place before time, it's a good walk from the car park, took us about 7 - 10 mins as there was no signs of the hotel we needed to find, where we were told by another party that there was a delay of 20 minutes. After half an hour a man from one of the nearby houses asked if we were waiting to go on the trip, we said yes and had been waiting a while. He kindly offered to phone the guy who was supposed to be running the trip. He came back after 10 mins. approximately to say that the trip was cancelled due to the operator closing down for the season the day before 11/10/23. If it hadn't been for this person making a phone call I doubt the operator would have advised any of us the trip had been cancelled. After contacting Tripadviser our refund was quickly dealt with, within a few days

      Scenic boat trip
The day of our trip was a little cold but we were provided with blankets. Spectacular interaction with white tailed eagles. A little quiet with other wildlife. Boat was a bit smaller and basic than expected. Crew friendly and wildlife guide knowledgeable.

      Fantastic experience, well worth it.
Very good experience. The guide was very kind and come back for us because we were late 2 minutes. We had fantastic weather and lucky enough to spot deer and gold eagle. Well worth it.

Boat ride for viewing wildlife is a hit or miss. Be on time for the train.
We were running late so called in advance to let them know. They were understanding and friendly on the phone. Was told that they must leave 10.40 sharp as they will miss the Harry Potter steam train otherwise. I wasn't aware of this so don't make the same mistake. Give yourself ample time to get there well before time. Nevertheless, Ali, our captain, kindly came back for us and allowed us to come on board. The boat ride itself was okay. We weren't so lucky with the wildlife. All we saw were some cows on the waterside. No red deers or eagles. Quite disappointing really. Just our luck I guess. There were binoculars and blankets available which was great. Commentary was informative. We still managed to see the train by going to view it from the viaduct. This was only a short walk away. Made up for missing it on the boat ride.

A must if visiting Glenfinnan or Ardnmurchan areas
Superb cruise. I was picked up at Polloch with my bike and cruised down to Acharacle. En route we sa a pair of white tailed sea eagles and black throated divers. We were dropped off in Acharacle for a walk about and then picked up for our return journey. On return to Glenfinnan i caught the bus back to Acharacle where i had left my bike and i cycled back to Strontian/Polloch. The crew are very helpful and knowledgeable

Excellent two hours, well worth it.
Went on a two hour cruise of Loch Shiel and thoroughly enjoyed it - very friendly and knowledgeable two-man crew, the skipper pointed out the wildlife, binoculars and guidebooks to the flora and fauna were provided. The commentary on the history and landscape was excellent and the views of the viaduct, mountains and coast were wonderful Highly recommend it.

A fine cruise on Loch Shiel
A great cruise! Very well equipped with binoculars, blankets and ponchos in case of poor weather. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly. The cruise took us through some lovely scenery. It took account of Harry Potter fans and people wanting to know about history and wildlife. Toilets and refreshments also available. I would recommend wholeheartedly.

      A must-do in the highlands!
Loved this cruise! What better way to see the Highlands than from boat?? Can’t say this enough: book a cruise! Beat the crows and see the Jacobite train (Hogwarts Express) go by on the viaduct from the water! Such gorgeous scenery. The 2 hours was the perfect amount of time.

      Great Day Out
Did the full length loch cruise in May whilst travelling solo. The crew were friendly and very helpful, and gave commentary on the sights and wildlife along the loch. The boat was very comfortable and they had hot drinks, spare binoculars and blankets if needed, as well as an undercover area. We saw several golden eagles, black necked diver, osprey and a close up of a white-tailed eagle. A lovely way to see the loch.

We had the best trip ever with Ally and we’re gone nearly 3 hours. Weather was fab and the views all the way down the Loch just breathtaking. Ally has eagle eyes as he was able to spot the Golden Eagles and was happy to spend time following their activity as they eyed up the Red Deer - he was really knowledgable about the wildlife and the history of the Loch as we moved down through breathtaking wilderness. He is also an impressive photographer!

The boat was Covid safe which pleases us and had wipes for the binoculars, hand sanitizer etc. There’s an open section at the front and an under cover section at the rear. Light refreshments and drinks were also on sale and the boat had a loo!

We parked in the National Trust carpark, seeing the viaduct and monument first then walked round through the hotel to the shore path. Easy to find. Really enjoyed the Glenfinnan experience but 10/10 goes to the boat trip. We will definitely be back and will do the full day next time. Thank you Ally 😊

We had the weather which made all the difference! We went on the bird spotting cruise and the staff on board the boat were very informative and nothing was too much trouble. We saw a white tipped eagle which was exciting! We're not 'bird watchers' particularly but we enjoyed the different experience.

I'm giving 4/5 because the booking system wasn't brilliant. Our confirmation email said to get there for 9am but the website said 9.30am which wasn't great for us as we were coming from Taynuilt, 90 minutes away. It also wasn't very clear on where to park but luckily another guest recommended we park in the hotel car park and walk around the shore line to get to the pier - we didn't know the detail about the quicker walking route.

I also got in touch with the company a month or two beforehand to ask what their cancellation policy was as we were in two minds on whether to visit due to covid and we might have rescheduled or seen if we could get a refund. I heard nothing so I assume no refunds, but an email to confirm as such would have been appreciated :-)

Fantastic cruise and well looked after by Aly and Chris. Cruised up and down Loch Shiel with plenty of really good commentary from Chris and learned a lot about the area and it's history. MV Sileas very smooth and well piloted by Aly who stopped to allow us to watch eagles soaring in above. Chris looked after his passengers well and offered teas, coffees, and snacks. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would book it again.

Enjoyed a leisurely afternoon cruise to Gaskan with our daughters. Friendly and knowledgeable crew. Blankets and binoculars provided (and hot chocolates). Treated to a fine display from an Eagle who followed the boat for a while before perching on a nearby tree! Captain Ali paused the boat so we could all get a good look and get a few pics.
Would definitely recommend Loch Sheil cruises. Curious to find out more about Mike Tomkies now that we have visited Gaskan - sounds like he was an interesting fellow!

We have done many river / Loch cruises and this I feel is one of the very best. The 1940 built Sileas was a perfect craft to take us on our 2.5 hour cruise down Loch Shiel.
Alway a bonus when the weather is good and the Loch at times was like a mill pond, so calm. The views as you navigate down the Loch are just breathtaking, you feel privileged to see the many vista's that you will only ever see from a boat trip like this. Do defo want to bring binoculars, but don't fear, if you don't they are provided. Tea, Coffee and other drinks were available. Both Ali and Chris were excellent, looked after us so well and were always on the look out for wildlife. We saw many red deer grazing on the hilltops and a number of golden eagles flying high above. Would highly recommend and will defo do this cruise again when we next in the area.

Fantastic guided trip, from the stunning scenery to the sighting of Eagles, Deer and the magical experience of rainbows over the Loch 100 metres away from the boat.
Our guides Ali and Chris were very knowledgeable about the areas history and also took the time to stop and allow us to view all the wildlife spotted on the binoculars provided.
Finally on arriving back on land, Ali learned one of our party had an ankle injury and insisted on driving us back to the train station.
Top bloke Top experience Highly recommended.

Lovely cruise down Loch Shiel. Did spot some eagles flying at some height,I have been lot closer to them, but it was really just about enjoying the peace and tranquillity as we chugged down the loch in our vintage boat. useful commentary and we slowed if anything interesting was spotted on a shoreline. Strangely I enjoyed this trip more than the other local vintage transport offering ! The wind a bit blustery so would advise warm clothes and a good anorak.

What a great way to spend two and a half hours. Jim who skippered the boat is so amazingly friendly and knowledgeable about all things Loch Shiel and it’s surroundings. We took the Gasken cruise which and despite not managing to see any eagles and having less than pleasant weather we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise down Loch Shiel. The next time we are in this area of Scotland we will take another cruise down Loch Shiel and hopefully we will be lucky enough to have Jim as our boat skipper.

We were lucky to get the best weather (very rare in Scotland!). Skipper Ali and guide Ben provided the perfect commentary to the gorgeous scenery and rich history and culture of the area. Well stocked bar allowed us to have a cold beer in the loch whilst watching two rather distant golden eagles hovering over the Glen. Pair this with the steam train going over the viaduct and a spot of lunch and you have the perfect day.
