- 1An introduction to the New Forest, its wildlife, history, and people. You will hear about the origins of the New Forest as a royal hunting ground for William the Conqueror nearly 1000 years ago, and its modern-day role as a place for nature conservation, responsible recreation, and commercial forestry and farming. Led by experienced local wildlife experts, this short walk provides a great introduction to the New Forest National Park and covers 2-3 km in 90 minutes.
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- J3081TJdis0 contributionsFantastic guided walkEnjoyed a truly lovely afternoon with Marcus and a small group searching for hawfinch in the New Forest. Marcus' knowledge of both hawfinch and the forests flora and fauna generally is extensive and he is generous and engaging in sharing his experience. Several hawfinch spotted and a couple of crossbill as a bonus! Hidden forest trails, fantastic views, deer and parachute fungi all added to a rewarding trip. I would recommend to anyone interested in the forest/birds/nature and ecology to book a trip with Wild New Forest, you won't find a better guide. Thank you Marcus!Written 22 January 2025
- Relax256990358300 contributionsExcellent tourWe did a scheduled two hour, which ended up being two and a half hour guided Hawfinch walk with Marcus. His enthusiasm shone through from beginning to end, and was contagious. His knowledge about all things Hawfinch is astounding. We saw Hawfinches flying in to roost, but even had we not seen Hawfinches it would still have been more than worthwhile attending the walk just to listen to Marcus, and such a lot. Great day.Written 22 January 2025
- br0wn20180 contributionsExcellent guided walks in New ForestMarcus and Emily knowledgeable and friendly make the guided walk very interesting and at a relaxed pace. Plenty of time to stop and spot nature and talk about whatever we came across. Thank you love your tours and will be back again soon.Written 15 January 2025

The leaders shared their expertise and enthusiasm and we were rewarded with some views of hawfinches returning to their roost.A lesser spotted woodpecker was a bonus. - Traveler429472390610 contributionsBeaulieu River Boat Tour…Really interesting and informative whatever your level of knowledge. Highly recommendedWhat a brilliant afternoon, we really enjoyed floating past a huge variety of wildlife..sadly no Eagle today, but a Great Northern Diver made up for it. Marcus was informative and the coffee and mince pies a nice touch. Will definitely go againWritten 3 December 2024
- G3555LShilaryb0 contributionsExtended Beaulieu River Boat TripWe started our trip from Bucklers Hard. We had good weather with no wind. Marcus pointed out all the wildlife and was a mine information. We saw Seals, plenty of wildfowl including Widgeon, Teal, Egrets and Cormorants. The highlight of the trip was a guest appearance of a Sea Eagle. We stopped off for Bacon sandwiched and Coffee. A memorable trip.Written 13 November 2024
- Ada C0 contributionsExcellent value for money. Time well spent.Efficient, well planned trip. Pick up was punctual as were directions to the meeting point. Marcus and Emily were the perfect pair, one hosted the ten adults and three dogs aboard. Marcus had an extensive knowledge of the wildlife in the area, especially birds, and was happy to explain the bird behaviors. Historical sites were also pointed out but no explanations were labored or too technical. The weather was perfect and I know everybody, including the dogs had a great time. Would thoroughly recommend this trip.Written 25 October 2024
- Culture103032334440 contributionsBrilliant time had on the Beaulieu River! We enjoyed our trip out on “Lazy Daze” yesterday (24/10/24) and could not have been lucky with the weather - sunny and warm! There were 5 couples in total, with Marcus and Emily the organisers, who were absolutely lovely. Marcus certainly knows his subject - really knowledgeable about every species of bird spotted. Also give interesting historical facts as we passed different landmarks. Sadly we didn’t see any seals - they were obviously out “fishing” but it didn’t spoil what was a really good trip. We were well looked after with a cuppa and slice of delicious homemade cake made by Emily’s daughter. This trip really was the highlight of our stay in the New Forest and would highly recommend to anyone - so calming being on the water.Written 25 October 2024
- kimcU3447YM0 contributionsExcellent Fungi WalkWould highly recommend, Marcus and Ellie are friendly and informative and make the walk really interesting. We saw around 55 species of fungi, we do one each year and each time it's different with a diverse range of things to see. Lovely to get out in the forest with a group of like minded people.Written 24 October 2024

An excellent walk around Wilverley from local expert Marcus. He gave us a great tour including the history, flora and fauna of the New Forest that was insightful and well delivered. He even showed us some plants that are unique to the forest, a real treat! Completely recommend the tour for the modest price asked, and will suggest to friends and family.

A brilliant tour, Marcus was a wonderful guide with his young assistant, we saw flora, fauna, birds, butterflies, deer, learnt about the history of the area and local customs. The views were magnificent. Take this tour and really get to know the New Forest.
Marcus was engaging, super knowledgeable answering questions and walking at a good pace to accommodate the slower walkers. Wonderful, cannot recommend highly enough! Thank you Marcus!

The Wildlife Wander walk by Marcus in the New Forest was excellent. He and Emily explained so much about the forest, its wildlife, plants, birds and other interesting background knowledge about the ponies and commoners. Marcus and Emily were both extremely friendly and helpful. The walk was very well paced and leisurely, with lots of opportunity to stop and talk about what we were seeing and hearing. Plenty of time to take photos and just admire the wildlife. Their knowledge is first class and they were so keen and passionate about the New Forest and their walks - ensuring that everyone enjoyed it. We would highly recommend their walks. We also went on the Boat Trip from Bucklers Hard down the Beaulieu River and the evening walk around Keyhaven, which Marcus and Emily run.

A wonderful gentle walk exploring the beautiful diverse habitats in the Forest.
Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and answered all our questions. He explained the history and customers of the ‘Commoners’ who have had the right to graze their ponies and cows in the New Forest nature reserve for centuries.
It was a happy and memorable walk. One I would highly recommend for all those with a love of the countryside who want to learn more about its animals, flora and fauna. I will certainly return. Thank you Marcus.

A very well organised walk with so many Fungi seen even though the season is coming to an end.
Marcus had undertaken a recce in advance so he was able to guide us along the route spotting about 60 different fungi, from miniature ones to large bracket fungi. What a wealth of knowledge Marcus has and he shared facts and answered so many questions from the group.
Other interesting information about the forest and the wildlife to be seen was pointed out. We had plenty of time to take photos and a list of all the fungi was sent to participants afterwards.
I’m already looking at Wild New Forest events to book another walk. Brilliant 🤩

A wonderful few hours in the Forest, where beech leaves carpeted the ground.
So many fascinating fungi found by the very knowledgeable Wild New Forest team, who gave us time to take photos. Interesting stories revealed by Marcus about the different fungi. Not just the biology, but also the social aspects e.g. the actions of reindeer herders …. You need to join a trip to find out what they get up to…
I think I might have to go again too 😊

We had a fantastic time, as a family of four, exploring the New Forest with Emily-Louise and Marcus. They were so knowledgeable about animals, insects, flora and fauna. Our young children became completely engrossed in finding fungus and bugs for nearly 2 hours! Thanks for getting us out into nature and enjoying the fresh air as a family!

Fungi Explorer Walk. Wow, what an incredible couple of hours. Marcus is so knowledgeable, is a very good host, and does his homework beforehand to ensure the very best experience. We saw around 60 species in 2 hours over a short area. Would thoroughly recommend, and will be doing more discovery tours with Wild New Forest in the future.
