What to expect
You will learn the fundamental Ikebana flower style, the basic upright style of Sogetsu school. A teacher will show you how to hold scissors, how to use KENZAN (a needle-pin holder), how to create the basic Ikebana style. After her demonstration, you will try to make the same flower style by yourself. You will understand the sense of space and the meaning of Ikebana with creating your artwork. After arranging Ikebana, we will enjoy a cup of green tea and Japanese cake together and appreciate your work. An experienced teacher leads this course. We provide this course at the traditional Japanese inn that has 60 years of history. You can enjoy the beautiful retro architecture as well as Ikebana. We will create Ikebana at the TATAMI room. There are so many attractive points in the architecture you can never skip. After Ikebana experience, a staff of Ryokan will show you beautiful architecture, and you can enjoy a mini-tour of Ryokan. Let's take a beautiful photo in like a movie set. Please look at the Instagram of our leader Mika Otani ( Ikebana artist). Her ID is mikaotani_flowers.

Brilliant Experience Very Relaxing Enjoyed Being in a traditional Japanese room
Aug 2019
We were ushered into a tranquil room with tatami mats and calligraphy wall hangings, and sat on the tatami mats whilst we made the flowers arrangement. It was also so refreshing to be in a room with air-con as it was 38C outside and scorchingly hot. I enjoyed making the arrangement and we were given a diagram of how ikebana lines must be arranged for harmony which was extremely helpful and our instructor was patient and helpful whenever we were not clear about the different angles or lines to follow.

The experience was serene due to the fact that we were in a traditional Japanese room and ryokan, but personally I feel that it would have been far more enjoyable if our instructor was not so serious. As we had to be so precise with cutting the stems and if we cut a stem an inch longer than was expected in Ikebana we felt that it was frowned upon, but it was also difficult to understand at times, and when you try your best you feel like a school kid at school. I understand and think that his is a proper school so I can understand that if you are learning at a school or college you have to be particular and precise about the art, but we were only there for 2 hours as tourists sampling and learning about the art of flower arranging. I personally would have preferred for it to be a little bit more fun. But in saying this and to be fair maybe its just different cultures of Japanese seriousness and Western culture of being more relaxed. Afterwards we were not offered to take the flowers home and had to leave them there. I would have loved to have been able to take them home and display them in my hotel room to be able to enjoy and show off my creation. It was a nice gesture to be served a traditional sweet and green tea.
Afterwards the lady who runs the ryokan was kind enough to give us an informative tour of the ryokan, and she showed us the public bathing area, as its seperate from the room and is shared amongst the guests, the different rooms and how each room portrays a different season. She was also kind enough to tell us about different places to tour and recommended different Japanese gardens to visit. I was very appreciative of her showing us around and explaining Japanese culture of how nature is followed and respected in their daily lives.
All in all I would recommend this tour but not for children. It is also easy to get to and only 5 min walk form the station.

Great morning learning about Japanese floral art
Jun 2019 • Friends
We arrived by subway to this lovely inn and experienced a private lesson in the art of Ikebana including each person making their own arrangement. We then had tea and toured the inn. Our hostesses were charming, patient and very informative.Through our lesson we learned the philosophy behind the art or ikebana and developed an understanding of Japanese beauty where less can be more

Really Nice Daytime Activity
Apr 2019 • Solo
An excellent experience.
We learnt about Ikebana in a small group, and prepared an arrangement ourselves.
The teacher was great. The setting was lovely, and the Ryokan host made us feel very welcome. We had good quality tools and materials to do the job. I attended with my mother, and it made us very happy. Would recommend this to others who want to learn something about Japanese culture 100%.

Kadō: An elegant expression of Japanese aesthetics
My sensei Kimiko-San who is as elegant as the Ikebana piece she created was the best teacher I could ask for. Her passion for this traditional Japanese Art form is inspirational. Under her patient guidance, I learnt the principles from the Sogetsu school of ikebana (yes! There is method in the randomness!) and I can’t wait to get home, try my hand at my next piece and do my sensei proud! (The specific equipment required can conveniently be purchased after the class - highly recommend getting a set!)

Highly recommended for flower enthusiats!
Dec 2017 • Friends
I went in october 2017 with a friend and we had one other person join our class, so our group was small. The class was so intimate and lovely. As a short introduction to the art of ikebana I think it was great! Mika was generously answering all our questions and explaining everything very easily. I picked up a few tips and tricks for flower maintenance and care as well as a deeper understanding for the art of ikebana. And we had a lovely chat about more than flowers after our arrangement - so nice. Highly recommended for flower enthusiats!

I had a wonderful time meeting you. One great thing to have Ikebana class is we can meet new people whom we couldn't meet without flowers. It's beautiful friendship flowers bring us. Looking forward to meeting you again in near future.
