About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Mike P0 contributionsI felt like I was a trainee gunner 🙂This is a large castle area with an interesting and unique history spanning multiple wars. For me the highlight was definitely the canon & musket firing demonstrations & the entertaining talks about these. I feel much more confident in firing a canon & musket without injuring myself! The importance of firepower is still relevant today as the world continues its conflicts.Written 29 October 2024
- markkxldor0 contributionsIf you're in Jersey, it is a must visit!I just went to the coast to see the options..., and in 10 minutes I was on this 'waterbus'. This transport was not only convenient but also unique! It took about 10-20 mins to get to the castle(s), and about 1-2 hours there. All in the afternoon, beautiful weather and lights, sunshine, sea... It was hard to imagine that there was war, times ago. The walls are full of hundreds of years history. There were almost no visitors this time, so sometimes I could just walk around or sit alone, listening to the nature... Sometimes it was like a treasure hunt adventure, with the freedom to explore any part of the island. That made this even more interesting, since it was up to us, how much and what we'll have as takeaways, and all in a relaxed mood! The small museums are also great, people really do a lot to keep up and develop the place! I recommend this visit to everyone! Note: I bought souveniers, which I don't do too frequently. But when I do, then those are good quality and/or the activity was stunning. Yes, it was this time!Written 26 October 2024
- LordsWhoTravel0 contributionsThis is WELL worth a visit!Such a great visit! From the amphibious vehicle across the bay to the history of the site. There is a lot to see on in the Castle, we had booked onto a tour however when we arrived we just walked about on our own to experience the site. If you are unsteady on your feet you might struggle, there are a lot of steps and it's uneven but it's history!! I personally think, the best part of the visit was finding a hidden seating area by the café (middle of the island). There is a sign on the left hand-side, go upstairs and there is a little garden. It made us feel like we were the only people on the island, and lots of sparrows came to visit us. Very enjoyable!Written 25 September 2024
- Dream661009472150 contributionsAmazingElizabeth Castle is a fascinating castle and it's well worth a visit. You can get across to it on buses that go in the water. Great for wandering about and learning the history of the castle. Prices are good. A must do whilst staying in Jersey.Written 23 September 2024
- AlisonWolverhampton0 contributionsWell worth a visit. We visited a couple of times, the first time we were able to walk along the causeway which is a lovely walk. No tours or anything were available when we first visited, I think due to staff shortage, but on our second visit we enjoyed a guided tour around the Castle, a "gunner" who was dressed in costume and demonstrating a musket and talking all about how one is used etc. Elizabeth Castle and The Hermitage are steeped in history. On our second trip it was high tide and we used the Amphibious vehicle. There's a small shop, toilets and a cafe.Written 11 September 2024
- AnneL4380 contributionsAn interesting and enjoyable VisitWe had a very enjoyable visit to the castle. It was pleasant weather so we enjoyed the walk both ways across the causeway. The castle is steeped in history and thank you to volunteer guide Susan for her interesting and informative tour. And thank you to the Sergeant (Chris) for his entertaining demos on how to load and fire a cannon and a musket. We spent about two hours there - including a cafe stop. There is a beautiful little cafe garden to sit in up some steps but we only discovered it by accident at the end. Wonderful views.Written 8 September 2024
- PaulineD7570 contributionsA great day outWe stayed in the Grand Hotel and watched the bus boat drive across the sand and into the water to get to the Castle. We HAD to do it. The castle was ok, but what really made the day was King Charles 1st (or maybe 2nd). He was hilarious. He had us in stitches for over an hour lording it about telling us about his life, all factually correct but so amusing. We then got treated to the same actor being a soldier for another hour, showing us how to use the musket and canon. Again, taking the mick out of us, rolling his eyes and involving us all. We discovered after the actor was Michelle Hervieu. Thank you Michelle, you were brilliant and really made our day.Written 30 August 2024

- lizw1820 contributionsBrilliant visit full of history and great viewsWe had a fantastic visit to Elizabeth Castle and took one of the amphibious boats (Betty) to the Castle. There was lots to walk around and great views. We especially enjoyed the walk along the pier break at the end of the castle. Toilets were excellent with three blocks. The cafe was nice and I enjoyed my tea! It's worth looking at the various membership or ticket options before visiting as this can save money if visiting multiple sites. NB. It's worth checking the tide times as the boats appeared to start later in high tide. Might be worth checking with the ticket office in advance.Written 24 August 2024
- 570nolat0 contributionsFascinating CastleExcellent Castle, Jane was our guide full of fascinating facts and insight into the castle. The weather was great so explored everywhere and had some great views from the tower. It does involve quite a lot of walking and climbing stairs so allow plenty of time to fully appreciate everything. If you are less mobile you don’t have to do all the steps to still get a good look round. It really made you realise how it was during WW2 and it’s quite important for that to be remaining. A castle very steeped in history of centuries which was quite a surprise. I went over by ferry and back on foot well worth the walk at low tide if you can.Written 20 August 2024
- Companion279286371410 contributionsCheapest option is to buy the Jersey Heritage annual pass!Just came on to say that the pricing system Jersey Heritage have in place is at best sneaky, at worst misselling. If like us you intend on doing both Elizabeth Castle and Mont Orgueil, then the cheapest way to do this is to join Jersey Heritage for a year. At least it works out that way if you are a family of four. This is cheaper than buying separate entry to both castles AND - crucially - it is significantly cheaper than the “4 sites for the price of 3” visitor ticket they are promoting! Do your sums and don’t buy the 4 for 3; go for a year’s membership. Doesn’t limit you to 4 attractions (the Jersey museum in St Helier is free anyway…), means you can revisit an attraction during your stay if you are so minded, and you also get 10% off in the on-site cafes. You can join on the day at the entry gate for the main attractions, you don’t need proof of address, or photo ID - you don’t even need to give bank account / credit card details for a recurring payment. 4 for the price of 3 is a rip-off and I’m surprised they are allowed to sell it / promote it in the way they do as it is not the cheapest way to purchase tickets.Written 14 August 2024
- EmmaS19800 contributionsA great walkReally interesting castle to visit. The access via the bus/boat is a fun addition to the day, I recommend getting on it when you will experience the change from land travel to boat travel so when tide of fairly high. The walk around the castle is steep in parts and uneven but manageable. Stunning views as you walk around.Written 9 August 2024
- Fearless806830 contributionsDisappointing visitWe were very disappointed. There was very little in terms of exhibits & just a few information boards, no interactive displays or guides around and empty rooms. It has the potential to be very good, with some beautiful buildings that could be used for displays etc but I now realise that there are major maintenance works underway, so it definitely wasn’t worth visiting for us at the moment and not worth the money we paid. Maybe your experience depends on what day you visit and if they have more activities.Written 4 August 2024
- PaulandJoanne_100 contributionsJersey Break 2024Situated to the west of St. Helier along the promenade, quite a walk from the town centre marine area, a good five minutes or so. The castle is cut-off from the main land at high tide although there is a tractor across at high tide, at low tide you can walk across on the causeway or use the tractor, we did the latter both ways. The castle has quite a large area to look over and NOT all is accessible to disabled people with walking difficulties. Allow at least two hours to see everything.Written 28 July 2024
- trarolls0 contributionsRolls does St Elizabeth CastleWe loved the Castle it was very interesting and full of history, the view was Beautiful, the story about where St Helier got its name was interesting as well. We also had a steak pie in the little cafe, highly recommend, loads of steak pieces in it.Written 14 July 2024

This was a wonderful day out, the journey over on the ferry (inc in ticket price) was fun and the castle situated in the bay have such amazing views. We saw hundreds of oyster catchers on the walls & the beach, a gull sat on chicks Jersey Heritage had again put on a perfect audio visual imparting information about the history of the castle in a fun and just the right length. The tea room was nice and reasonably priced and it was delightful to sit in the sheltered castle garden amongst the flowers. The highlight of our visit was the ‘living history’ where we met Charles II who was excellent

Jersey Heritage are to be congratulated on the excellent presentation of the sites on the Island. We thoroughly enjoyed our visits and for a familiy of four it provided 3 days activities which was excellent value. Both the Mont orgueil and Elizabeth Castle provided great fun for my 6 year old twins. There were activities specifically to entertain kids such as a small play area and dressing up room at Mont Orgueil and the live weapons demonstrations at Elizabeth Castle. Both trips take most of the day if you take time for lunch. The exhibits at Maritime Museum provided excellent diversions for our one rainy morning and we managed to get a quick look round the Jersey Museum on our last afternoon. We are National Trust members and visit a lot of heritage sites and were genuinely impressed with the creativity in the Jersey Heritage sites. The films were excellent and engaged our kids very well, I was surprised how much detail they could remember when discussing the visit afterwards. Definitely worth the money.

Great value to see the main attractions on the island. Buying these individually will cost a lot more. Recommend both castles and the Jersey museum. The maritime museum is a bit underwhelming and looks like it hasn't been updated recently.

Interesting castle to visit. Much larger site than I expected. Try and walk across the beach at least one way if you can. You will need to check the tides. We picked a day when King Charles was running an historical tour, it was both informative and funny. The actor is really good! We also caught the canon being fired. Parking in St Helier was a bit tricky, we finally opted for the multi storey which is quite expensive.

We joined Jersey Heritage as members (joint seniors) which was financially better than the 4 for 3 pass. HOWEVER we would recommend the 4 for 3 pass as we consider the 4 attractions (Elizabeth Castle, Mont Orguell Castle, La Hougue Bie and The Maritime Museum) must visits if you get to Jersey. Each attraction is a good half day to do properly!

This offer is a must if you're a history/ museum type. Fantastic value as all museums here beat anywhere seen on mainland for superbly curated artifacts and excellent presentations. Mind blindly good in fact, no fillers of 'activities ' areas masquing lack of content here! We were literally gobsmacked with the quality of all the museums/ heritage exhibitions

Interesting... we started with Elisabeth Castle , then the Jersey museum , La Hougout Bie and also the Maritime & Occupation tapestry museum . I think I would have gone to Mont Orgeuil in preference to the last museum, although the tapestry was very interesting , it was only £6 entrance and in hindsight the castle at Mont Orgeuil would have given us more value for money! But saying that - all places were vrey welcoming and friendly - helpful - we discovered that once you had visited one place you could return again as many times as you liked during the validity of your Museum Pass.

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your visits to our sites using the Jersey Heritage 4 for 3 pass. Including the two castles as part of your four chosen sites offers great value and as you point out you can return to the sites as many times as you like within the 7 days.
We are delighted that you found all of the sites welcoming, helpful and friendly - we will pass this feedback on to our teams!

A visit to Elizabeth Castle starts with a ride on the amphibious bus, which either drives or sails out to the castle, depending on the tide. I went across at high tide and enjoyed the brief voyage. On arrival, I joined the highly entertaining tour of the older parts of the castle led by King Charles 2ND himself . It's a fascinating insite into the history of the castle, jersey, and our monarchy . The king was a great actor , had the audience participation down to a fine art, and we all left smiling.
Next, I joined the Sargent for some drill practice and watched the musket and cannon fire. Again, brilliant acting and historical knowledge brought another era of the castles history to life.
I enjoyed a locally made pastie in the cafe , wandered around, taking in the rest of the castle and the views of the bay . There is at present renovation going on in parts, and I'm only sorry I won't be here to see the result.
The walk back across the sand was lovely as the sun came out. Great day.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this review following your memorable visit to Elizabeth Castle recently. We are delighted our Living History team performances provided such enjoyment and insight to enhance your overall experience and we will certainly relay your feedback to the members of the team.
A visit to the castle is a unique experience, as you have detailed, and the completion of the current renovation will add to this further. A great reason for another visit in the future?

Only one star given because of the pricing structure!
Don’t get the 4 for 3 pass! Cost up the annual membership instead - certainly for a family of four it is significantly cheaper, and you will make your money back even if you only visit Elizabeth Castle and Mont Orgueil. Allows you to visit all Jersey Heritage attractions, not just 4 (bear in mind that the Jersey museum in St Helier is free anyway…), unlimited revisits during your stay should you wish, and 10% off in the cafes.
There is no reason to purchase the 4 for 3 pass and Jersey Heritage should not be selling / promoting these. Fortunately we did our research before arriving on the Island and so knew what to ask for, but the price of the annual pass is not promoted at the entrance to attractions so people think they are getting better value from the 4 for 3. It is simply not so.
You can purchase annual membership at the entrance to an attraction. No proof of address or photo ID is required and you are not asked to sign up to a recurring direct debit or similar so it’s a one-off cost.

Just had a fab day at the Castle. Yes, there is a vast amount of history and it’s a beautiful setting with the sea lapping against the rocks, but the staff make it brilliant. From the entertaining DUKW skippers, to the cafe staff, our immensely knowledgeable tour guide Daphne (with a superb jerriais abetot) to the authentic 302 year old Gunner in full costume! What a brilliantly entertaining and informative history lesson. Thank you all
