Lots of wildlife!
Apr 2021
Rosi was an excellent tour guide on our boat tour. She was very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the wildlife we saw. We had a multi-generational group including my parents and young children. Everyone had a great time. We saw monkeys, crocs, sloths (with a baby!) and lots of birds. I highly recommend reaching out to her or her husband for a tour.

Wonderful Nature Experience
Feb 2020
Rosi was a knowledgeable and accommodating guide. She certainly knows her birds and, most importantly, the area. As we were leaving the dock, she described the plan for the tour and asked us what we wanted to see. When we answered, Roseate Spoonbill, she said other direction and turned the boat around. We saw the spoonbill. Along the way, she knew where owls were nesting and took us ashore to see them The list of birds was countless. They use a small boat so you can go into narrower channels. Rosi and her husband are nurturing their property to become a nature preserve. Far better to do this than joining the van loads from La Fortuna.

Great for Bird Watchers
Feb 2020
The drive to & from the river had interesting scenery. Didn't see much "wild life", birders paradise.
The lunch served was okay.

Fantastic Tour
Feb 2020
We went on the river tour with Rosi and really enjoyed it. We had done a tour of the Tarcoles River earlier in our vacation and since we enjoy doing these boat tours we wanted to see the Frio River. The Frio was very different than the Tarcoles, but both were wonderful. On this tour we got to see a lot of different birds, a few caman's and some monkeys. Rosi is an excellent guide and she did her best to find a few target birds for me. We hope to visit Cano Negro again some day and will most definitely take a river tour with Rosi again.

Enjoyed the wetlands with local guide
We spent a lovely few hours with Joel exploring what is considered to be the third most important wetland in the world. At booking, he was very communicative and clear on instructions - we decided to drive ourselves to Caño Negro and meet him there. He also suggested a time that works very well for us. From the moment we got there, we were in good hands. He offers the use of a nearby baño, which was very clean. We then boarded a small flat bottom boat that was covered and met the driver of the boat who was super friendly as well. We then took off - Joel pointes out birds to us, shared their names and behaviors and was amazing at spotting things like iguanas, monkeys, crocodiles, turtles, caimans all around us. They slowed down the boat so we could admire the wildlife and take pictures. I also noticed that when I took my phone out to take a picture, they would slow the boat down too. Joel also offered us fruit and water along the way. On the way back, we stopped at a bird watching structure where we got to admire the whole area, where we saw flocks of birds enjoying the wetlands. The whole experience lasted more than two hours and it was lovely. Thanks Joel!

Excellent boat tour
This was a real treat. The two of us shared a boat with our guide Rosi, who for the next 2.5 hours gave us a great tour of the river and wetlands. We saw very many birds, a few Cayman and lizards, iguanas. Rosi was very knowledgeable, the tour was calm and well paced. Rosi provides us with fruit and water. It was one of the highlights of our three week trip to Costa Rica.

The road to Caño Negro is unpaved and quite bumpy in places, but well worth the trip for this tour.

We booked this tour privately through Tripadvisor https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/AttractionProductDetail?product=216910P1&d=19422044&m=19907 and drove to Caño Negro where we met Rosi at a time we chose. This was much cheaper and more convenient than booking through hotel or a tour company.

Wildlife, scenery, great guide!
Jan 2020
We were the only 2 people on the boat. The river is peaceful and full of wildlife. More monkeys that we saw in the Amazon, lots of birds and reptiles. The guide was very knowledgeable and pointed out so many animals we would have missed. The drive to the boat dock is a bit rough, but the trip is worth it! Don't miss it.

Stunning wildlife and scenery on the Cano Negro!
Sep 2019
We got the recommandation from our hosts, Donald and Pippa, from Casitas Tenorio to go on the Cano Negro boat tour with Paraiso Tropical.
Our tour guide and boat captain was Rosi. She made herself really approachable from the get go. We hopped on a broad bottom boat with around 12-15 seats.
The broad bottom makes the boat makes the boat really stable, so you can comfortably lean on the sides, or move around when different wildlife is out of your eyesight.
Rosi steared us genlty on the canal and gave us valuable information about the wildlife refuge. She has the eyes of a hawk, spotting wildlife that would otherwise go unobserved by the untrained eye.
She used a laser pointer to guide us where to look, but without aiming directly at the animals.
On the banks of the canal we saw Emerald basilisks, aka Jesus Christ lizards, iguanas and caimans.
We saw multiple species of birds: cormorans, egrets, King fishers, Anhingas (Snake bird), Scarlet Rump tanagers, Social fly catchers, Green Herons, a red-breasted Trogon etc.
Rosi carefully steered the boat close enough so we can have a closer look and take photos, but was mindful not to stress the wildlife with our presence. This was her approach throughout the tour and we were delighted to see that nature is respected and protected.
Rosi is very knowleadgeable and always has interesting details about the fauna and flora. We also loved that she gave us enough time to take in the scenery. We really enjoyed the visit to the lagoon. The scenery is amazing! You have a splendid view of the iconic volcanoes of Costa Rica: Arenal, Tenorio, Miravailles and Rincon de la Vieja.
This tour is indeed a Tropical Paradise ready to welcome birdwatchers and all nature lovers!

Knowledgeable and respectful tour guides - wonderful experience!
Sep 2019
We took the boat trip to Cano Negro in late September, on the recommendation of our B&B in Bijagua - Casitas Tenorio. This was an incredible experience for birdwatching, and just enjoying a tranquil boat ride down the river. The tour went for about 3 hours, and our guide, Rosi, was amazing. She effortlessly spotted wildlife that may as well be invisible to the untrained eye, and was really proactive in steering the boat back and forth to make sure we could catch a glimpse of as many creatures as we could, while still maintaining a safe and respectful distance so the animals wouldn’t be stressed or disturbed by our presence. She was also really thoughtful in explaining what we could see - flora and fauna - with lots of details, and answered all of our questions. Much of the tour we were on the boat winding down the river surrounded by lush rainforest, and there were moments (without giving too much away) where we reached large clearings with really, really amazing views of four volcanoes in the region: Arenal, Tenorio, Rincon del Viejo and Miravalles. We saw an incredible amount of birds and other animals: kingfishers, anhingas, swallows, heron, egrets, toucans, caimans, spider monkeys - to name a few! The boat is very stable, and the water incredibly calm, so it was easy to move from one side of the boat to the other in order to take a closer look at certain things. The opportunities for photography were awesome - so if you’re a keen photographer, this is a great spot. Our friend’s DSLR and another friend’s drone made for some very spectacular footage!
