About
Experience the remote beauty of the Doubtful Sound on a full-day tour from Manapouri. Boat across Lake Manapouri, drive over Wilmot Pass, then transfer to a catamaran for your cruise on the sound. Look for New Zealand wildlife like bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, and penguins, and learn from your guide about this pristine wilderness in a less-visited part of Fiordland National Park.

Highlights
  • Explore the rain forest and waterways of Fiordland National Park
  • Experience the South Island’s uncrowded wilderness and native wildlife
  • Several morning departure times to suit your New Zealand itinerary
What to expect
  • Start your tour with a short cruise across Lake Manapouri, followed by a drive over the Wilmot Pass, New Zealand’s most expensive road to build. Make stops along the way to experience the dense rain forest of Fiordland National Park and view Doubtful Sound from above.  Upon arrival at the water, board your spacious catamaran for the Doubtful Sound cruise. Your naturalist guide shares commentary about the landmarks and wildlife that you might see, including bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin. Depending on the conditions, you might even journey as far as the Tasman Sea. Choose from several morning departures for your tour to Doubtful Sound, a gorgeous destination that rivals popular Milford Sound for natural beauty, yet remains less crowded. Non-slip shoes, warm fleece or sweater, waterproof jacket, sun protection, and insect repellent are recommended. Your tour ends with return to Manapouri.

A superb day out, every aspect of the day is fantastic - the two different boat cruises with varied landscape, views and the coach trip over the pass a real treat thanks to driver Tony. We had such good weather we even ventured out to the Tasman Sea briefly, and saw two beautiful penguins and a colony of seals. I've been to Doubtful Sound before and this won't be my last visit.

Thank you for this 5-star review! It's great to hear that you loved every aspect of the journey and got the chance to venture out to the Tasman sea and spot some wildlife along the way. Your review makes the entire day sound magical. We would love to see you again in the future.

Has to be the best ever cruise I've been on. From the moment we boarded the first vessel in Manopouri to the climax of the 24hr trip, whales breaching on the Tasman Sea coastline. We can't thank the crew of the Fiordland Navigator enough. The food and endless coffee/milo and treats were all amazing. Best nature trip ever! Will be back.

Wow, the best ever cruise. What a compliment! Thank you very much. We are so glad you had any amazing experience in Doubtful Sound with us, and what a treat to see whales on the Tasman Sea coastline. The Fiordland wildlife love to come and say hi to our crew and guests and it's always such an incredible moment when they do. We would love for you to visit again and hope that the experience is just as magical as the first. Thank you again. The RealNZ team.

This is without a doubt one of the best value for money days you can experience. We opted to have the lunch provided which was great. Lovely to be on such big boats with so few people (sad for them though!). The commentary was excellent as we motored across Manapouri. Such history. The bus trip over Wilmott pass was so interesting especially with our knowledgeable driver and great character Tony. He was amazing and joined us on the cruise down Doubtful Sound. Our day was wet and cold (as are 200 days in the year!) but so AMAZING. Waterfalls everywhere, brooding, beautiful and so special for the 3 hour trip. On getting to the Tasman we saw Fairy penguins, seals and albatross. Repeating the process on the way back was far from boring. Different sights to see as rain ceased and views opened up. Have to say if you were deciding between Milford and Doubtful - go Doubtful. Without a doubt!

isiting Doubtful Sound was a bucket list item for me. I recently went aboard on one of Real Journey's new two-night/three-day cruises. I fully recommend the experience, as it was very relaxed and the length allowed us to experience a real variety of weather conditions.

Highlights of the trip were all of the wildlife we saw (mollymawks, dolphins, penguins), our nature guide Courtney who was exceptional and, as many reviewers point out, the food on board!

Over the course of the cruise we had the opportunity to explore every arm of Doubtful Sound, it was surprising how different each area of the fiord was. I would definitely do this trip again, I thought it was great value for money.

The Start. The Finish and everything in between was what made this trip so wonderful. Great staff at front of house and great guides during the tour.
I would have to rank this in the top ten of activities/tours I have been on.
Well worth the money

Ticking this one off my bucket list - loved my day trip to Doubtful Sound. Great communication of what to expect and what to bring. Comfortable and quality transportation (boat, bus, boat). Enjoyable guiding and informative commentary. And what a location - spectacular, unique and memorable! Hopefully more Kiwis can get to enjoy this special place before more tourists return.

We did the seven hour trip which consisted of going on the boat then bus coach then three hour boat trip in the beautiful ford.It was magnificent. The team was great and crew very engaging and helpful. I had my family with me three adults and two children (3+8years old).
Complementary drinks were available and a drink machine that dispenses coffee ,cappucino, espresso, chocolate milk etc was available.
Also clean filtered water so no need to carry too much water which we did with our food.We brought our own lunch but cup noodles, muffins, chocolates and some drinks are also available to purchase via cash .

The entire experience was surreal,Shoutout to all staff especially for the wonderful trip, and for the fellow passengers who tolerated my children (who i believe were very quiet and polite) and apologies to the lady who may have been offended by my child's ?noise. The "Sound of Silence" experience for five minutes was pure bliss listening to the water falling from afar and looking at the beauty around you.Was a great experience except for the lady wishing she wished it could shut the children off too, very offensive as my children were quiet even in the bus in resoect to everyone (other passengers may verify that they were indeed at their best behavior).

We will surely do this again and hopefully dont get to be with people who dislike children..maybe they can offer private trips for special people not wanting kids?

Kudos!!! It was a great atMOSSphere! =)

The trip to Doubtful Sound was another highlight of our trip to Fiordland. It is a must do if you are down this way. We stayed in Te Anau and drive to Manapouri ( 20 minutes ) where we left the car. The whole trip was so well organised and ran like clockwork. The boat across Lake Manapouri, the bus trip over Wimott Pass and the Doubtful Sound Cruise was just great. The skippers and bus driver were all fantastic.
It was a 7 hour day so come prepared with food, drinks, etc ( although you can get hot drinks )
We also had spectacular weather - although apparently the Sounds are spectacular in the rain as well .Dont miss this experience.

Wonderful full day of exploring Lake Manapouri & Doubtful Sound. The team are passionate about their work and their backyard and we saw so much because of their knowledge. The trip was adjusted based on the weather & what was around - the Dolphins were a special treat and beautifully managed. Our driver, Tony was very accommodating for the wide age group & special requirements. The facilities were very good considering how remote we were. This was so wonderful - PLEASE don't tell anyone about this! Keep it our secret of wonderfulness!

We had a two night cruise with Real Journeys on Doubtful Sound. The experience was magical, sunsets, sunrises, whales, seals, waterfalls and kayaking all in unique and wonderful surroundings. The crew could not be faulted, helpful and friendly. We certainly enjoyed the running commentary of our resident wildlife expert, Watsie. We suggest all Kiwis get down there and enjoy the special places New Zealand had to offer.
